Wisconsin Territorial Assembly Elects Speaker in 1839
The Council and House convened in joint session to organize the Legislative Assembly. William Bullen and James Collins vie for President. Collins ultimately elected Speaker after multiple ballots. George Beatty unanimously elected Secretary. George C. S. Vail elected Vice Secretary. Stephen N. Ives chosen Sergeant at Arms. John Carlin elected Chief Clerk. Governor Henry Dough delivers a message urging unity and planned removal of Winnebago Indians, with calls for troops and rifles to secure frontier peace.
