Singular Petrifaction From Chickasaw County Case

A Lowell Courier correspondent reports a petrified human body found in Chickasaw County, Iowa. The 70-year-old woman’s grave was opened by her daughter to remove remains. the corpse, now almost fully turned to stone, weighed about 640 pounds and could only be removed with great effort. The body hardened in the ground, softened slightly when exposed, and the daughter later buried it in an outbuilding to prevent theft. The tale was relayed by Presbyterian minister Mr. Stewart.
