The Dunham family of Winthrop street are in sorrow after telegram confirms Wesley Dunham, their only son, was killed in a California railroad accident. He would have turned 21 in November. No further details are yet available.
Edward Wilson age 45 of South Boston and a companion sail from the South Boston Yacht Club at 10 am to smelt fish when the Marguerite bursts into flames off Winthrop. The 33 foot craft sinks after a gasoline explosion. Wilson and friend are rescued by George F. McDuffee who provides clothing and helps them reach South Boston.
The Winthrop Yacht Club will stage a Halloween Carnival on October 29 30 and 31 offering fancy goods groceries confectionery an automobile canoe gas range gas water heaters and ladies' adornments. A dinner is planned Saturday evening with many committee chairs named including decorations candy apron and booth construction. A flower booth and fortune telling booth will be added later with fine music each evening.
Mr J C McMurray moved his Shirley Street garage near Winthrop Beach station to a new one story concrete facility with entrances on Fremont and Putnam streets. The opening invitation drew a steady flow of visitors Wednesday evening from 8 to 12. Ladies received roses and gentlemen cigars with punch served to all.
The Public Library will reopen Sundays from October 3 for reading, operating 2 to 9 p.m. through further notice. This change resumes Sunday hours, inviting patrons to browse and read during the extended period.
A Tuesday evening reception at Union Congregational Church welcomed Rev W J Sherman and his bride with the presence of parishioners and town residents. Dr W J Porter led an excellent program with an orchestra and pianist Miss Helen Young, soloists Mrs Frank Duddy and Mr H H Crane, and an afterglow of refreshments and social time.
Aaron A. Downs of 23 Neptune Avenue died suddenly at his home Monday. Funeral services were held at his residence with interment at St Paul’s Cemetery Arlington. He was 48, longtime superintendent of the fumigating department of the Boston Board of Health, and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Charles H. Hanlon died at his Sewall Avenue home on September 25 after a prolonged illness. Requiem Mass was held at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, with burial in Brookline Hollyhood Cemetery. He was a Portland native, 53, and longtime Boston hotel proprietor, survived by his wife and four sons. Pallbearers included John J. Fallon, William Reardon, Cornelius Keefe, and others.
The Winthrop Improvement Association will hold its first monthly supper and meeting for the 1914 1915 season at the Deane Winthrop House Shirley Street. Supper at 6 30. Mrs Annette S Driscoll from Everett will present extracts from Songs from Many Lands with vocal selections. Denis A McCarthy will read poems about the present war. Judge Charles J Brown will discuss The Curfew Law and its enforcement.
The roll off at Bert Ayers alleys Thursday listed Carter Healy first Wardwell second Cobb third Swartz fourth Brownie fifth. Winthrop teams join the Greater Boston league Tuesdays and Suburban league Fridays. Ladies roll off every second Friday with about 40 entries tonight.
