The board at its November 9 meeting unanimously elected Ed ward R Clarke principal of the High School. Clarke, a Naples New York native born 1880, has prior experience as High School principal in Milford from 1908 to 1911 and later led Leominster High School with noted results.
The article notes Mr. Clarke finished work at Naples High School in 1898 and entered Williams College. He earned an A. B. in 1902 and then served six years in Scituate as principal of Hatherly Grammar School and High School, while acting as treasurer and member of local groups. He moves with his wife to Winthrop to take duties at the high school on January 4.
Burglars targeted Henry F. Rich Russell P. Lang John P. Conner and Seigel's Creamery in Winthrop. Police say three pairs of shoes were stolen from Lang's store and $3 in cash from the creamery.
A successful whist game event at the Social Hall on Friday night drew about thirty tables and raised a good sum. Proceeds go to buy a silk flag for the chapter room. Committee in charge included Mrs. Walter Taylor chair, with Mrs. K. A. Bloomfield, Mrs. Joshua Rem, Mrs. Harris Soule, and Mrs. Harry M. Jones.
William Parkman Commandery K T held a public installation in Masonic Hall East Boston with 400 attendees including many ladies. Winthrop residents installed included George E. Safford E C George F. Reif G Joshua Remby W Clyde D Moulton C of third G Harland O Pratt C of second G Henry Taylor C of first G John Anderson Organist Frank M Belcher Charles E Lamb Henry J F Klagge Edwin R Burns Walter H Wate Guards.
Large attendance at a Deane Winthrop Lodge smoke talk at Wadsworth Hall with an excellent program by lodge talent. Remarks, readings, and music noted. committee led by Frank Mayer, William D. Childress, and Walter C. Swenson. The Dream Theatre on Thursday December 3 will host Knights of Pythias night with vaudeville and photo plays.
Mrs Nancy Stewart Lee widow of James Tee died Friday at 3 am at her daughter’s home 34 Somerset Avenue Winthrop. Funeral services were held at her residence Sunday officiated by Rev W W Peck. Interment in Winthrop cemetery. Survived by four daughters Mrs C T Paul Mrs Gately Mrs Rufus Eaton Newhall and Mrs Harry C Whorf and a son Harry Lee.
Winthrop Civil War Veterans enjoyed a fine banquet at War Veterans Hall Thursday evening with about two hundred attendees from Winthrop and Greater Boston. Committee in charge were Mr. Charles Ridway and Mr. Arthur Neilson. An orchestra played throughout the evening as Adjutant General Wetherbee spoke along with guests from Charlestown East Boston and local members.
A large crowd attended a Neutral Whist gathering hosted by Winthrop Equal Suffrage League at Mrs. William N. Jenkins residence 175 Pleasant Street. Mrs. Jenkins and several assistants decorated the home with yellow chrysanthemums and flags while Mrs. Connell spoke about the Massachusetts Equal Suffrage Association bazaar set for next Monday and Tuesday at Copley Plaza Boston.
