Winthrop Elks Hold Inaugural Reception and Ladies Night
The Winthrop lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks held its first reception and ladies night in Wadsworth Hall Tuesday evening. The event drew a large crowd, featured ornate decorations, bells tolled and lights went out at 11 p.m. in memory of departed members, and extended from 8 to 9:30 p.m. with dancing and a late collation in Columbia Hall. The affair was directed by lodge officers and a long list of committee members and reception aides.

Col Leverett J Walker Dies After Illness at Fort Banke
Col Leverett Hull Walker U S A commander of the Boston artillery district died at Fort Banke after a brief illness. He succeeded Brig Gen J M K Davis as Boston district commander last July. Born Butler Pennsylvania March 26 1851, he entered West Point in 1867 and had frontier service in New Mexico. He led Wheeler’s expedition escort west of the 100th meridian in 1878 and taught infantry tactics at West Point from 1876 to 1880. He joined the artillery in 1882, rose to colonel after a long career including Spanish War service, and was given a military funeral at 2 o'clock Wednesday before his body was sent to Arlington Cemetery.
