Town Meeting Debates Costly Ladder Truck Purchase
At a 150 voter special town meeting Friday night nearly all articles were approved in a heated session. Debate centered on article 9 proposing an additional 700 toward a motor driven ladder truck, with supporters citing Robinson machines and opponents urging an efficient purchase. several articles funding sewers drains and highway work also passed. The town authorized transfers and borrowing as needed to fund the appropriations.

Mrs Hattie Floyd Dies After Long Illness at 54
Mrs Hattie Tucker Floyd died at 3 30 p m Sunday in Winthrop after an eight week decline. Funeral at 2 30 p m Tuesday from the late residence 36 Centre Street conducted by Rev W G Blackett of Dorchester with prayers and hymns Nearer My God to Thee and Lead Kindly Light. Interment in Winthrop Cemetery. She leaves husband William A Floyd seven daughters and three sons, a mother Mrs Sarah E Tucker, a brother Frank W Tucker and two sisters in Reading Mrs Albert W Damon and Mrs Clement Gleason. William C Skaggs in charge of services.

Last Saturday a lawn party on Lincoln street raised funds for the parish. About 300 children attended a lively program with dances by Catharine and Eleanor McCarthy, Zita Hasenius, Mary Galvin, Mary Lee, Blanche Silkman, Torrie Bova, and songs by Mary Galvin and Margaret Smith. Mrs Nellie Barnard played piano. matrons and helpers are named. ice cream served by the Sears sisters.

Obituary of Amos Stuart 83 dies after kidney disease
Amos Stuart died Monday at age 83. Funeral services were held at his daughter Mrs. Stanley Smith’s residence with Rev Seelye Bryant officiating and both Winthrop and Spanish War Veterans present. Interment in the Stuart family lot at Winthrop Cemetery with G A R at the grave. He was wounded at Gettysburg 50 years ago and lived in Winthrop and Winthrop Beach. He is survived by one daughter. Undertaker Charles R Bennison in charge.

Fourth of July Celebration Plans Grow From Small Start
The Winthrop Fourth of July celebration evolved from a 1911 idea by Deane Freeman to center the day on children. A committee formed, plans developed through winter, then a town hall meeting, and eventual public backing created a gala event. Support came from the Russell Sage Foundation and the Playground and Recreation Society of America.
