Master Hugh Collins twelve years old son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Collins of River road was coasting with two companions on Cot tage hill Saturday at about 1 p m when the sled ran into a tree, striking his head and rendering him unconscious. He was taken to Dr Porter's and then to the hospital where a specialist now treats him.
Frances H. Simpson died Feb 11 at her daughter Mrs. Peterson’s Winthrop Street residence after an illness. The funeral was conducted by Rev. White and Rev. A J Hughes. interment at Woodlawn. Born 1845 in Lakeville New Brunswick, she married Mr. Simpson in 1869. he died in 1892. She joined the Baptist church at 16 and remained active. Surviving children include Mrs. Margaret Bent, Mrs. Frances M. Peterson, Mrs. Carver, James, and Wellington Simpson, with sisters Mrs. Ellen Waters and Mrs. Mary Miller.
The yacht club elected Commodore Thomas Davidson and vice Commodore Frank Belcher with William Murray as secretary and John H Simpson as treasurer. Directors for three years are William Bradford, R W Doe, John M Jaynes. George Floyd is fleet captain. Floyd won the Commodore cup and Bradford the vice Commodore cup. Geo W Poole received the club cup for most races. The third annual ball occurs next Wednesday at the New Winthrop hotel.
Winthrop Methodists and Unitarians join in Boston’s Morgan Memorial relief as mortgage of 46000 dollars is cancelled. Rev E P King and Rev E J Helms praised for leadership at a service with Bishop J W Hamilton and Dr Van Ness as speakers. Community leaders from multiple churches celebrate debt relief enabling expanded aid to the poor.
A valentine supper was held in the vestry of the Union Congregational Church on Tewksbury Street Tuesday evening. Committee chair Mrs C M Jenkins led alongside Mesdames Talcott Stetson Johnson Koerner Hammond and Hendrie with 10 high school girls serving 126 guests. Valentine napkins and red heart decor highlighted the event. Mrs Chas Ha Whitney led the party and candy tags as hearts were exchanged among attendees.
The Citizen's Civic League in Winthrop will not endorse or field a ticket this spring. Officers say criticism over alleged bossism and fixed plans led to the decision while the group maintains its identity and may call a meeting under by law if needed.
Precinct one adds 11 voters, precinct two 22, and precinct three 25. Precinct four meeting at Almont street schoolhouse next Monday 7 30 to 9 00 pm. Nomination papers due by the 23rd. Town meeting warrant drawn next Monday. Rumors of independent candidacies for Selectmen. Town election set for Monday March 4 in four precincts last year. Registration shows limited enthusiasm to avert disaster, while a few seek to influence appointments.
About 30 Rangers gathered at Mrs. Chas. A. Elwell's home on Wednesday to craft valentines for the junior members. Box coffee and cakes were served, and a luncheon followed. Reports from the secretary and treasurer were given, then a description of The Birds Valhalla in Lancaster on Jan. 31 featured violin by Mrs. Pauline Tucker and piano by Mrs. Chester Pope. Mrs. Frost described two recent snow experiences before 21 junior members arrived. Each child received a nature valentine and a jonquil, then Mrs. Cora Holahan read the fairy tale The Magic Swan.
John T. Healy and Agnes Curran wed Wednesday at the Church of St. John the Evangelist parochial residence in a large ceremony officiated by Rev. John H. Griffin. Healy, a post office clerk and Winthrop Council member, and Curran, sister of the bride Elizabeth, plan a weeklong honeymoon before settling in the area.
Mrs Francesca Tewksbury nee Pendleton widow of Charles H Tewksbury died at 225 Pleasant Street Wednesday morning after a short illness. Funeral held Saturday at 2 PM at West Medford Trinity M E church with Adelphi quartet Boston. Burial in Winthrop cemetery. Survived by May Lee Eugene and Charles H Tewksbury. Born March 19 1840 Northport Maine she lived in Boston before marriage and later in this town for 34 years. She traced colonial ancestry to Gov William Bradford and was known as a devoted wife and mother.
