Christian Science Lecture Draws Large Winthrop Audience

Virgil Strickler of New York, member of the First Church of Christ Scientist Boston Board of Lectureship, spoke at the Winthrop Theatre last Sunday on Christian Science. The hall overflowed with more than a thousand listeners, forcing late arrivals to be turned away as extra trains ferried visitors from out of town. The talk stressed healing and spiritual renewal through metaphysical teachings, arguing that disease and sin stem from error of belief and are cured by truth rather than physical treatment. The lecture highlighted Biblical references and the idea that mental causation underpins health and freedom from suffering. Continued on page six.

Winthrop Highlands Yacht Club Ball Draws 700 Guests

The Winthrop Highlands Yacht Club held its annual ball at Elks Hall last Friday night, drawing about 700 guests including Hon. William S. McNary, Selectmen Rem By and Carr, Sen. John E. Beck, Rep. Edgar H. Whitney and yachting association members from Massachusetts Bay. Commodore William F. Keith and Mrs. Keith led the grand march at 9 pm with 100 couples as guests wore elaborate gowns and gowns from noted residents. The event featured a decorated ballroom, novelties, a favor dance, and a novelty waltz German, with a large organizing committee and many volunteers from the Ladies Auxiliary assisting throughout the evening.
