Selectmen Election Change Defeated at Town Meeting
At a sparsely attended town meeting in the former high school hall about 75 citizens were present. A key article proposed shifting to elect a three member board of Selectmen who also serve as Overseers of the Poor with staggered terms. the motion was indefinitely postponed. Frederick W Belcher Dies in Winthrop at 85
Frederick W Belcher, long prominent in Winthrop affairs and a former town meeting regular, died at his home on Belcher Street from pneumonia after a shock. He led market gardening and served as tax collector and assessor, first president of the Good Government Association, and sung in local music events. He leaves a daughter G L Davidson, brothers Cyrus and Wilbur, and many relatives. Funeral at his home conducted by Rev Waterhouse and Rev M Day with floral tributes. Interment in Winthrop cemetery. undertaker Skaggs oversaw arrangements.

Colonel Gardner Hawkins Dies After Brief Illness
Col Gardner C Hawkins died after a three day illness at 125 Bartlett Road on December 15 from pancreatitis. Funeral rites from his residence featured the G A R ritual with Rev Charles S Otto officiating. Civil and Spanish War veterans served as pallbearers and escorted the cortege to Winthrop bridge, then to Stoneham for interment. A Civil War veteran born in Woodstock Vermont he earned a Medal of Honor and belonged to Vermont Veteran Association Edward W Kingsley Post 113 G A R and the American Legion of Honor. He leaves a widow two daughters and a son.

Auto Crash Hurts Charlestown Auditor and Officer
H M Blackford of 70 Thornton Park was struck on Rutherford avenue by a speeding auto driven by John M O Connell Jr assistant to John M O Connell vice president of the John T Connor Company. Blackford suffered concussion and scalp wounds and was placed on the dangerous list at Relief Hospital. The other driver John M O Connell Jr was arrested and released on 2000 bonds.
