War Risk Insurance changes streamline allotments and benefits

The October 6 1917 amendments redefine compulsory allotments to 15 dollars monthly with 15 or 20 dollar options, adjust alimony and family allowances, and shift payments to the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and military/naval offices. They expand definitions of parent spouse and dependent status, extend protections from seizure and taxation, and authorize penalties for fraud. Winthrop Trust Co Opens After Labor Day Build Finish

The new Winthrop Trust Company plans to open the first Monday after Labor Day as construction wraps up. With the vault completed in six weeks and interior work underway, the bank will offer local customers faster service once furniture and fixtures are installed.

East Boston Politician Charles Witt Dies on Park Street

Charles T. Witt a long time East Boston political figure and well known to Winthrop residents collapsed and died Friday night around 6 near Park Street while en route home He suffered prior shocks and doctors believe his death followed a second. He was 1848 born in Norway Maine and had lived in or near Boston since age 20. He served in the Legislature from Ward 1 1888 Board of Aldermen 1893 1896 chaplain to the State Senate 1898 1899 and ran for Congress in 1900 losing to Joseph A Conry He held Masonic titles and was active in Knights Templar and Shriners He worked in the milk business and was married in 1874 to Ella Hathaway of Medford. His body was taken to his Brookline home.

Revere Man Struck by Automobile on Revere Beach Boulevard

Edward J. Lilly age 33 of Dehon Street Revere suffered a fracture of the right leg when struck Sunday on the Revere Beach boulevard at Oak Island. The auto owner is Mrs William Rubin of Winthrop and the car was operated by Edward H. Condon of Cottage Park garage. Lilly was treated at Metropolitan Park police station by Dr J Stewart Morris and later taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Winthrop Elks Lawn Party and Cabaret Delight Many

The Winthrop Lodge of Elks held a Lawn Party and Cabaret on illuminated grounds and in the Ball Room despite an earlier storm. The event raised social and financial success thanks to the committee: Webster, Crossman, Gallagher, Farrar, Ahearn, Dunney, Knox, Russell, Ambler, Webster, Butler, Young, Healey, Benson, Curran. The Commonwealth Band and orchestra provided music for the lawn and ballroom dance, with the Remick Trio, Feist Singers, and Merrill Vaudeville Circuit acts entertaining audiences.

Military drills resume for Company A unit

The weekly drills of Company A, Fifteenth Regiment, M G, paused in August, will resume at the Armory on Court Road Monday evening August 26.
