Narrow Escape From Drowning At Pleasant Park
Charles Lowell of 626 Pleasant Street nearly drowned Sunday while bathing between the bridge and Pleasant Park Yacht Club. Miss Marie Ballem of 30 Main Street and Thomas Carleton of 162 Congress Street Chelsea, rowing nearby, helped save him. Carleton swam to Lowell after the man’s head bobbed, and Ballem dragged him into a boat and to shore as bystanders rushed to assist. Dr. Charles F. Mahoney revived him. Lowell recovered consciousness. Ballem previously saved a girl at Orient Heights and has received a medal for that act.

The Point Shirley Yacht Club staged a well attended social and financial success with a full house on the piazza. Performers included Misses O’Donnell and Mr. O’Donnell on orchestra duties, Ruth Scott on piano, Miss Nelson singing California and You, Eddie Dunn providing mirth with Not Me and Good night Nurse, and Mrs. Albert E. Magee performing My Rose in a World of Tears. The Pfau quartet and glee club offered several pieces, Joan Davidson sang If the Sands of the Desert Were Pearls, and Little Miss Does Brien danced. Refreshments followed and dancing continued. glee club members listed include Miss Nelson and several named singers and husbands.
