Winthrop Fire Ravages Four Cottages and Crest Hall
A Sunday fire in Winthrop destroyed four substantial cottages and Crest Hall, with an estimated loss near $15,000. Firefighters lacked a engine and fought the blaze with hydrants as winds shifted, aided by quick actions from train engineer Towkebury and arson suspect James Flanagan who was later held on $5,000 bail. The Sorrento, Capri, Burlington, Outlank, and Watervliet cottages were damaged or destroyed, with residents evacuated to safety and Hotel Ocean View offering shelter.
