With Fire Prevention Week near, a community writer urges cutting and hauling away overgrown grass and weeds that harbor mosquitoes and vermin. He warns that drying vegetation will ignite easily, spreading rapidly with wind and threatening property and lives if ignored.
Twenty six business and professional people attended the Winters Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon at the Fireside Restaurant. Special guest Lynn Nabers Democratic nominee for State Representative discussed interest in chamber work and community promotion.
The first bale of cotton at Winters Gin this year graded by Abilene at 1 1/16 inches for a white middling bale. Grown and hand-pulled by T. W. Norman. Loan price $24.00. The staple length is unusually long for the area. local average runs about 15/16 inch.
Jules Gipson field representative for the San Angelo Social Security Office plans October visits to Winters at the Chamber of Commerce office. On Wednesday October 9 and 23 from 9 30 to 11 30 a m residents may file claims obtain information or conduct other SSA business.
Winters high school prepares for Homecoming on October 25 with a football game against Merkel and a pre game ex student supper in the school cafeteria from 5 to 7 pm. Ex students will register for a 25 cent fee with a 1 25 dollar adult meal and 75 cent child meals. Queen crowned at halftime with escorts from the Golden Anniversary class.
Texas defensive back Denny Aldridge recalls his last man on Elmo Wright tackle and a key goal line stand that helped the Longhorns tie Houston 20-20. He talks of effort, experience, and a future coaching path as he faces Texas Tech. He mentions a high school friendship with Mike Patterson of Tech and notes his wife and three-year-old daughter.
James W Little son of Ervin and Mrs. Little of Winters was promoted to Captain while with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. He was reassigned to the 2nd Battalion 1st Artillery Fort Sill Oklahoma reporting September 23 after 15 months in Vietnam. He earned three Bronze Stars the Air Medal the Army Commendation Medal Vietnamese Campaign Medal Vietnamese Service Medal and a Unit Citation. His wife and two sons will join him at Fort Sill. the family had lived in Lubbock during his Vietnam tour.
The Punt Pass and Kick contests sponsored by Ford Motor Company and the NFL will be held locally on Saturday October 12. Dale Whitecotton of Dales Ford Sales announces the local sponsor and registration is open. Boys ages 8 to 13 compete for trophies in each age division with district advancement for winners.
A Winters area gathering on October 7 at 7 30 p m in Winters City Hall will organize a Runnels County Heart Association to affiliate with the Texas and American Heart Associations. Officers and a board of directors will be chosen and two heart disease films shown with Mrs Weldon Collins as temporary chairman inviting community participation.
Mr and Mrs James Davis of Houston were overnight guests Friday with his uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs George Shuffield.
Private First Class Clags Melvin Middleton, 20, son of Mr and Mrs Willard Middleton Route 1 Winters, was assigned as crew chief in the Ast Cavalry Division in Vietnam on August 21.
Winters City Council approved employing an engineer to prepare plans for further airport work south of town. The project aims to upgrade the stripped air strip to meet Texas Aeronautics Commission grant requirements of 24 000 dollars plus a city match, to be provided as in kind improvements.
In parts of North Runnels County the 1968 cotton crop may require hand-pulling to save clean cotton. Strong yields and heavy bolls have made mechanical harvest difficult, creating a labor shortage as farmers seek available workers. Defoliation started but rain delayed it, and some fields show dead cotton from root rot. Winters Warehouse logged five hand-pulled bales last week, with first bales paid to L. B. Hord and T. W. Norman for ginning at local gins.
Elm Creek Water Control District directors and other water and flood control interests will tour the new Robert Lee dam site under construction Friday afternoon September 21 from Winters.
The Rev. Wilson Canafax of Cleburne will headline the fifth Sunday night service of the Methodist Churches of Runnels County at Winters First Methodist Church. He serves as Conference Director of Christian Education and Social Concerns and will address both youth and adults after a Frito pie supper.

Roger Pendergrass studies at Texas Tech. Linda Schroeder attends the University of Texas. Marlene Brown at Cisco Junior College. Paul Jones begins third year at Freed Hardeman Junior College Henderson Tennessee. Florette Wood is a senior at Texas Woman's University. her husband Alan Wood is a senior at North Texas. A partial list was printed last week and more names will be added as reported.
Blizzards head coach Jerry Gibson reports a stronger practice week as the team prepares for the third game of the 1968 season against Clyde on Friday night. The squad, in a tight T and wide split, adapts its offense to players’ best capabilities after two losses. Clyde is 0-2 this season, last year finishing 0-10.
The Blizzards seek to end a losing streak as they prep Friday night against Clyde. Key players like Wintersman may miss time with a shin injury, while Donald Wade is a doubtful starter. Expected starters include Tischler Pierce at ends, Hart Torres guards, Colburn center, Kozelsky at QB, and Greer at HB, with several defensive backs and linemen named.
Hugo Vogelsang president of the Runnels County Farm Bureau urges residents to observe National Fire Prevention Week October 6 through 12. He cites national losses and promotes programs to reduce rural fire risk including sponsor support for firemen training and grants to departments for fighting rural fires. A 45 minute fire prevention demonstration is also offered to schools and civic groups.
The Rev. Marvin Burgess of Third Avenue Baptist Church Ballinger will preach at Southside Baptist Church in morning and evening services Sunday September 29. The public is invited to attend.
Winters Shooters Association an NRA affiliate sponsors a sighting in day for hunters. The event is Sunday October 6 at Winters Lake range starting at 1 pm. Instructors will assist shooters in readying rifles for hunting.
The freshmen football clash between Winters and Lakeview, initially set for Thursday, has been postponed to Saturday night. The game will kick off at Blizzard Field starting at p.m.
The Baptist Youth Choir will present Good News at a Fort Worth church. The program features Grantz and Susan Ceonan with the public showing receiving high approval. The choir plans to meet with the public following the Fort Worth event.
