Fall session of Brownwood Presbytery meets in Win

About 75 delegates are expected for the Brownwood Presbytery fall session at First Presbyterian Church in Winters on Thursday. The all day program centers Growth of the Lord's Work with morning events including an executive board meeting and a welcome by Mrs L F Wilson. Santa Anna’s Mrs Chas Oaks provides the response.

Opening Day At Local High School Reports Busy Start

About two hundred sixty students registered for the new year as seniors juniors and sophomores attended morning sessions and freshmen joined in afternoon. Regular classes began with substitutions due to illness including Mrs Morey Millerman for Melba Read and Dick Sullivan filling the vacancy. Elementary pupils reported to rooms for books assignments and ready for regular work this morning with total enrollment not exceeding last year.

Boxing Champion from Dallas Centennial Grounds Victory

Chester Mitchell of Lockney claimed the Texas light heavyweight amateur title after defeating Jack Rodriguez of Svaton at the Dallas Centennial Exposition arena. Mitchell, son of Mr and Mrs TB Mitchell, was crowned in a tournament featuring local boxers and drew praise from his family and city supporters.

Keystone Recover: Charm Rescued From Cow Stomach

In May 1934 B F Huntsman lost a Masonic Keystone watch charm at his Winters home. It was returned by Swift & Co Fort Worth employee G Green via mail. Green says the charm emerged from a cow stomach as undigested contents were flushed into a sewer. The sewer later stopped.

Stuckey and Lewis Open Radio and Electric Shop

Stuckey and Lewis open a radio and electric shop in Chillicothe, occupying the former Chamber of Commerce space on N Main. They offer Zenith radios, guaranteed repair service, wiring, and appliances. The partners bring ten years in electrical work and five years in Chillicothe business. Stuckey leads the shop now with Lew to join later.

Cotton picking slowed by rain in Winters district

Cotton picking slowed yesterday due to light rainfall in Winters and towns east of the area with heavier precipitation in some sections. Gins had been running steadily. 813 bales had been ginned so far this season as pickers arrived, but many farmers lack labor and wages of seventy five cents per hundred are common.

Runnels County Turkey Crop Expected to Surpass Last Year

A county survey shows turkey production likely to rise over 25 percent this fall. John A Barton, Runnels County agent, reports all 14 firms sampled have birds at or above last year, with some doubling their flocks. Birds are in better condition thanks to favorable weather and grazing in heavy feed fields, with few ailments noted and limited disease fromprevailing conditions.

Coaches Discuss Grid Prospects at Lions Club

Blizzard prospects for 1980 outlined by coaches Bob Fula kerton and Amon Johnston at Lions Club luncheon. Three tough away games anticipated against Cross Plains Coleman Ballinger with two open dates and home conference games versus Santa Anna and Rising Star.
