Texas lawmakers consider major workmen's compensation reform

A compromise bill outlined by AFL-CIO, Texas Manufacturers Association and Texas Trial Lawyers Association would raise weekly benefits from 35 to 49 and expand coverage to all governmental workers. The proposal, set for January, adds disability and death limits, pre hearing reviews, wage continuation incentives, medical evidence power for the board, and a 25 percent cap on attorney fees. It would cost employers about 36 million annually and taxpayers two to three percent of payrolls, with gains for handicapped programs and arts funding in schools.
