W R Gray Jr announces final date to file requests to join the Cropland Adjustment Program. The Runnels County ASCS office accepts participation for land retirement ranging from five to ten years.
A one day golf tournament at Winters Country Club has been moved from May 8 to Sunday May 29. The change avoids Mother's Day conflicts as many golfers planned to be away.
Six Winters High School students qualified at regional UIL contests in Lubbock for the State literary and track finals in Austin. Darlene Sneed, first in shorthand, will attend with teacher Frances Brede Meyer. Track team members Jimmy Green Richard Puckett Terry Rives Jerry Awalt Leroy Kettler plus alternates head to Austin with coach L G Wilson Friday.
Winters Country Club canceled family night for now saying dinner and golf will resume when weather cooperates. Directors announced the change this week and will revisit plans once conditions improve.
Army Pvt Billy R Dees parents Mr and Mrs Ben Taylor Jr live in Norton Missouri. He completed a seven week combat engineer course at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri on April 28. Training covered road rail and bridge construction and repair along with demolitions and mine warfare. He entered the Army December 1965 and finished basic training at Fort Hood Texas. He is a 1965 Ballinger High School graduate.
Voters in Runnels County endorse Omar Burleson for Congress after redistricting moves the county to the 17th District. The piece lauds Burleson as a hard working conservative with strong defense and fiscal principles, urging re election by a wide majority.
Winters City Council approves offering water to all Lakeview Cemetery lot owners. Letters will invite opinions and return cards by May 15, with work to start before June 1. Plan includes new lines and faucet connections within 75 feet, charging 25 cents monthly billed January 1. Also approves closing half block of West Truett St to parking near First Baptist Church Educational Building.
A four week event at Winters Country Club begins June 5 to crown the city golf champion for spring. All community golfers may enter with a $3 fee. Players should start scoring now and submit cards to the pro shop for flight placements.
Mrs. M W Boles Randy and Reggie attended parents day at Tarleton College in Stephenville. Ricky is listed as a sophomore student on campus during the event.
Winters Post 9193 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary held a joint officer installation at the Post Home Monday night. District 22 Commander J A Henderson Jr installed the VFW officers and Mrs N D Waggoner installed Auxiliary officers. Waggoner presented outgoing Auxiliary President Mrs J La Morrow with a past president pin.
Campaign to repair and paint Winters Municipal Hospital continues with voluntary donations. Total contributions reach 2786.80 to date, latest 25.00 memorial gift for Mrs. Frank Johnson from Rosa Lee and Slim Albro and others including Sam Andra Albro Joe Frank Rita Ruth Tony Albro F E Berryman Frankie and Mary Berryman.
Cecile Nitsch Wigginton of Midland former Winters girl returned from the Texas Association of Legal Secretaries State Convention in Fort Worth April 22 24. She was installed as vice president of the Midland Legal Secretaries Association at Bosses Night Banquet April 20 at Midland Country Club. She served as Historian last year and prepared the history book which won second place in state competition.
Rev. and Mrs. Rey L Crawford attended a Council of Scottish Clans of Texas meeting at Salado. Rev Crawford was elected to the Central Texas Area Museum trustees at Salado Saturday. The sixth annual gathering of the Clans will be held November 12 and 13.
Mrs. M. L. Dobbins of Winters, president of the Brownwood District WSCS, will be a delegate to the seventh WSCS and Wesleyan Service Guild assembly in Portland, Oregon, May 12 15 marking the 25th anniversary. About 8 000 women from 50 states and overseas will attend under the theme Called to Renewal and Service. Dobbins departs May 10 from Love Field Dallas with eight other district presidents. she has led Winters WSCS and served as district president the past two years.
The Pentacostal Church of God invites Rev L C Samson a district superintendent from Austin to lead weekend services. Special music will accompany services with evening sessions at 7 30 and morning worship at 11 00 on Sunday.
Voters in Runnels County will pick nominees for governor and all state offices, plus U S Representative in the 17th District. Incumbent Omar Burleson faces Eldon Mahon in the 17th District race, with a broad list of candidates across counties and precincts.
Four Winters residents active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary were named to offices in District 22 at the Eden district convention. J A Henderson Jr and Ramon Hudson were named district trustees. Mrs Charles Dry was named banner bearer. Mrs Ramon Hudson was district flag bearer. Henderson presided over the district meeting and Mrs Henderson led the Auxiliary convention. John Paul Keelan installed officers and presented Henderson a past district commander pin. The convention was attended by additional Winters members including Mr and Mrs Ramon Hudson and others.
John Waddell, owner of Waddell Chevrolet Co. in Winters, is named a winner in the Strike It Rich in 66 campaign. He and Mrs. Waddell will depart Dallas May 6 on a chartered airliner for a three day trip to Los Angeles and Las Vegas with all expenses paid.
Marsha Hays was named drum major of the Winters High School Blizzard Band for the coming year. Dora Snell was chosen feature twirler with Kay Orr rank corporal. The twirling line includes Theresa Meyer Gayla Beall and Jean Mostad with Brenda Burns as alternate. Jill Matthews named junior high feature twirler.
The Rev. C A Marigham of Groesbeck will lead a spring revival at Winters First Methodist Church from Sunday May 8 through May 15. Pat Hamilton of Abilene directs the choir with evening services at 7 30 and a 6 45 morning service on weekdays. Coffee and doughnuts follow the morning services in the church basement. The pastor, Rev. Robert Walker, says the schedule allows businessmen to attend before work and invites the public to join.
The Winters branch of the First Savings and Loan Association opens this week and will host an open house May 9 to 14 with hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. the office at 102 South Main offers full services, gifts for visitors, and plans to hire a full-time Winters manager.
