Funeral services for Mrs. J. M. Laxton 73 of San Angelo and former Ballinger resident were held Saturday at Ballinger First Baptist Church. The Rev. R. L. Denton and the Rev. N. T. Gault officiated. Burial was in Old Runnels Cemetery. She died Friday in St Johns Hospital after a short illness. Born Mary Mildred Tyree in Georgia, she married J. M. Laxton in 1906 and lived in Runnels County since 1915. Surviving are her husband two sons three daughters two brothers one sister six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
President Kennedy orders a revival of the Fair Employment Practices Committee to oversee government contract employment. A commission will hear complaints of job denial based on race or religion, with penalties for contractors found guilty. Vice President Johnson will lead the new oversight.
Winters Public Library received new books as living memorials to John Curry Oscar Parrish Sue Lewis Carlos McWright Mrs Mennie Loyd Dr Roy Maddox and H L Way. Memorial gifts came from multiple families and individuals. Books include Epidemic Pilgrims In Paradise To Kill A Mockingbird and works on Lincoln Woodrow Wilson and more. The library hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 to 5 pm.
On the eve of the Ides of March Winters High School Latin students held their annual banquet at Pierce's Cafeteria. Sixty one students and guests attended in Roman dress with togas. For fun each second year Latin student received simulated Roman money to bid for slaves represented by first year students and white dressed slaves contrasted with masters in colored sheets.
Kleta J. Gerhart daughter of Mr and Mrs H F Gerhart is among students listed on the business administration dean's honor list for the fall semester at the University of Texas.
Texas faces 10 to 12 million acres of abandoned cropland and denuded rangeland. Extension specialists Hoffman and Ragsdale advise surveying existing vegetation, avoiding reseeding if native key grasses exceed 15 percent, conducting soil tests, and preparing the land like a cash crop before replanting with grasses and implementing weed control and proper grazing to restore production.
India has arranged a World Bank loan to finance expansion and modernization of its rail system. The plan includes purchasing new locomotives and passenger cars, expanding trackage, and upgrading infrastructure as part of a seven year program.
