Dr. Bob Jarvis praises Winters host Mrs. J. B. Whitlow for an outstanding banquet meal. The column reflects on spring’s arrival March 20, with renewed nature and calls for tidier summer travel as storms and chilly winds contrast with seasonal renewal.
A meeting will be held at the Winters Country Club Tuesday night at 7 30 for those interested in forming a Duplicate Bridge Club. Mrs John Edward Benen isi likely organizer.
Jerry Gibson, former Abilene High assistant, was chosen by the Winters School Board to lead Winters High as head coach and athletic director, reporting April 15. He succeeds L. G. Wilson who moves to Floydada. Gibson is a 1964 graduate of Abilene Christian College and Breckenridge High School’s 1959 state champ in declamation.
Winters sub office of the Runnels County Tax Assessor Collector warns of a tight deadline for vehicle registrations. Deputy Mrs. Ted Meyer reports 650 passenger cars registered so far and notes slow weather and rain deter drivers. Fleet owners are urged to bring titles and papers to speed processing before the final rush.
Unofficial 1968 first quarter rainfall in Winters totals 13.8 inches through Tuesday night, about half the five year average of 28 inches. 1965 remains wettest with 33.1 inches. 1963 had the least at 24.5 inches. No official weather station exists in Winters. figures are unofficial and reflect a damp period not seen in decades.
The Junior Culture Club presents a color film Gentle Giant at the State Theatre on Saturday March 23 at 10 o clock. The program includes a color cartoon and proceeds go to the Winters Library fund building fund per club members. The Paramount release is based on a Walt Morey novel and targets children.
Norton school students will view a driving safety program on March 27 at 9 30 am. Ben Fullard of the Texas Farm Bureau leads the two part event with a talk and a street demonstration. An electric detonator will fire paint bullets to show stopping distance as students and faculty test a specially equipped car.
North Runnels County nears its $600 Heart Association drive target with $592.03 raised to date. Mrs. W. L. Collins chairs the effort with Joe Stevens and John Gardner as co chairs, thanking contributors and volunteers across the county.
Mrs. M. L. Dobbins will preside at the Brownwood District WSCS conference meeting to be hosted by the First Methodist Church on March 26 27. Principal speakers include Mrs H L Georg of Kansas and Mrs Harold Baker of Toledo with Rev Sidney Roberts of the Dallas Fort Worth Area also speaking. Delegates from Winters are Mrs Roy Crawford and Mrs Eva Kelly with an alternate delegate named.

Winters schools will run through May 23 and 24 to make up two lost days due to ice and snow. Students will return the following Monday to pick up report cards, as announced by Superintendent Carroll Tatom.
The Runnels County Archery Association will host an open house at their outdoor range Sunday March 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Access is via the Novice Highway due to impassable spillway roads. An archery tournament will be held with archers from across the state expected to attend. The Winters range recently earned a Four-Star rating from Texas Field Archery Association. A concession stand will operate during the event.
Absentee voting for the school election began this week and will continue through April. Voters unable to be in the district on Election Day April 6 may cast absentee ballots by contacting the school office.
Winters area businessmen will host an industrial luncheon Monday April 1 at Huffman House to honor Winters industrialists during Texas Industrial Week. Dale Whitecotton leads the planning and a brief program with an industrial speaker is planned.Contact Whitecotton by Friday before the event to attend.
The Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives from the 64th District will be honored at a Ben Barnes Appreciation Day dinner in Winters on Tuesday April 2 at 7 30 p m in the Winters school cafeteria. Hal Woodward chairman of the Texas State Highway Commission will give the main address. Winter committee members include M L Dobbins W M Hays J W Bahlman and T A Smith with tickets available from Bob McGarvey Ballinger Hal Woodward Coleman and Gromer Pitts Brownwood.
District 5 AA UIL Interscholastic League will hold a spring literary meet at Winters High School on Saturday March 23. Six member schools will enter teams and individuals in twelve speaking and literary events.
Mr and Mrs Nolan Cave attended the Golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Char ley Duncan of Glencove which was held Sunday in Coleman.
Misses Harris and Maudie Raines of Midland visited the Cook home during the past weekend, according to local family notices.
Wesley M. Hays owner of Western Auto Associate Store was named Winters Man of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce banquet. John W. Norman presented the honor citing Hays for his community service as former politician and Salvation Army unit representative. Bert Huffman, Texas Tech coach, urged service to the community. New and retiring chamber leaders were introduced.
Hospital Corpsman 2nd class USN James D. Shook is home on leave through April 17 after serving aboard USS Forrestal in Portsmouth Virginia. He heads to Camp Pendleton California for Marine training with the 3rd Marine Division and will deploy to Vietnam for duty as a corpsman. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Shook and is married to Betty Jernigan. they have a 10 month old daughter Cassie.
Engineers from the State Soil Conservation Commission will field examine the Elm Creek Water Control District in the third week of April to assess flood control and water retention needs on Elm Creek and Coyote Creek. The survey will measure past flood and erosion damage and guide possible future programs with district residents.
In celebration of Lions International 50th anniversary the Winters Lions Club donated copies of the book Search for Peace to Winters High School library Winters Elementary School library and Winters Public Library. Accepting were Jake Joyce for the high school George M Beard for the elementary school and F R Phil Anderson for the public library.
Winters High School Blizzards finished sixth at the Plateau Relays in Eldorado behind Colorado City Mason Brady Stanton and Llano with 32 points. Standout results include Rex Harrison second in 120 high hurdles and Charles Mathis fourth in the mile relay with teammates Horace Johnson Arlon Barnes and Tommy Smith. Arlen Barnes also placed sixth in the 440 dash and James Greer led a third in discus with Kye Nitsch.
