Methodist Church Was Organized in 1891 in Winters
The Winters Methodist Church began in August 1891 when a group met at the Yeats home. The exact organization date is unknown due to lost records. The Rev. George D. Wilson organized the church, and the Ballinger Mission was formed that year. The church later moved through the Ballinger Circuit, built a parsonage in 1897 at a site now occupied by a Magnolia service station and Higginbotham Lumber. The Winters Circuit became a full appointment in 1909, later joining the Central Texas Conference. The original charter list is incomplete, but among known members are R A Yeats and family, Viola Yeats, Robert H Yeats, C E Bell, Mamie Bell, W H Rodgers, Ollie Meek, A F Adams, L N Pike, O M Pike, Rubottoms, and Leola Rubottom. Robert H Yeats is the only living charter member, residing in Artesia New Mexico. The church worshipped in a schoolhouse until 1899 when the first church was built. The current pastor is Rev Edward H Otwell, the 37th, a Winters native, living at 705 State Street with his wife and daughter Cynthia.
