Roger Babson surveys economic progress through mid-1961, noting a sharp rise in stock activity with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing from 616 to 706 by mid-May and easing to 684 by mid year. He cites inflation psychology and speculative enthusiasm boosting buying, while bond prices rose on easy bank credit, with tax-exempt bonds showing an exception.
The analysis notes industrial output recovered in March after a winter decline with a broad upturn signaling the end of the fourth postwar recession. Consumer spending lagged early in 1961 but saving rose as debts fell, while housing starts edged up and road construction surged in spring. Personal incomes fell early but rose to a new midyear peak as hours and wages increased.
