Winters Lake Dam and Lake Winters History and Specs

Winters Lake was built after sedimentation reduced Winters Lake capacity in the 1930s and 1940s. City leaders chose Elm Creek five miles east for a dam, and bonds of 200000 were approved in 1944 to fund dam, lake, plant, and lines. The dam began service in 1946 with spillways, a 2050 foot long earth embankment, and a 14 foot max depth. The watershed spans about 14400 acres with rainfall around 22.63 inches annually and sediment yield reduced by conservation efforts to 12.6 acre feet per year.
