Texas Department of Public Safety urges caution during a four day 102 hour Independence Day weekend. The drive to cut deaths includes extra patrols and frequent updates on traffic fatalities to remind drivers to avoid speeding and drunken driving.
Attorney General Crawford Martin's report on the Liquor Control Board investigation faulted Coke Stevenson Jr. for not supervising the shop, accepting expensive gifts from liquor and beer interests, and failing to ensure uniform enforcement of liquor laws.
Report declines to condemn lawmakers who practice law before the LCB and does not condemn the three member liquor board for lax oversight of the agency. Investigators say most problems of the Stevenson administration are now resolved under Acting Administrator O. N. Humphreys Jr.
Bitter Senate debate slows the special session as the revenue and sales franchise tax bill heads to conference. The House passes measures extending drinking curfews to 2 a.m. in large cities, enabling semi mandatory breath tests for drunk drivers, and permitting out of state tuition hikes to about 600 dollars per semester while resident tuition stays the same.
Gov. John Connally named Garrett Morris of Fort Worth to the State Highway Commission to succeed Hal Woodward of Coleman, selecting Marion T. Key of Lubbock to replace Morris on the Public Safety Commission. He also named Jack Kultgen of Waco to Woodward’s chairmanship of the Highway Commission and named Ford Albritton Jr. of Bryan to the Texas A&M University Board of Directors, William H. Atkinson of Kenedy to Kingsville, with reappointments of Lewis W. Maples of Kingsville and Leo J. Welder of Victoria, and Robert E. Davis of Waco to the Texas Library and Historical Commissions, along with a reappointment of Fred Hartman of Baytown.

A $42,900 federal grant for Valley View Park in Dallas will be matched by the city in an $85,800 project to acquire 17.4 additional acres adjacent to the 8.7 acre park. Will Odom of the Parks and Wildlife Department notes this is the 27th fund approval under the Land and Water Conservation Act since 1965.

Ambassador Ed Clark and Sen John Tower were elected to Southwestern University board of trustees. Lt Gov Preston Smith appoints Sen Tom Creighton to Senate finance sub committee. Oil allowable raised to 46.4 percent for July from 45.2 June. Sen Jim Bates served as governor for a day. Lone Star State Bank of Austin file an application with the Banking Department.
Mrs Grover Davis and family express gratitude for kindness shown during the hospital stay. They thank those who sent cards flowers and prayers and acknowledge Dr Rives and the hospital staff.
The Wo man’s Society of Christian Service met Tuesday morning in the parlor of First Methodist Church with Mrs John Schaffrina presiding. The program on The Church in the Inner City was led by Mrs Sallie Gray and included devotional remarks by Mrs Clarence Ledbetter. Other members attending included Mrs Gattis Neely and Miss Frances Stricklin.
Mrs. Walter Green hosted the Wingate Sew and Sew Club meeting last Tuesday with 14 members and one visitor present. Members enjoyed quilting and embroidery after a brief business session. secret pals were revealed. Attendees included Mesdames Byrd Hancock Woodfin Pinegar Middleton Williams Hunter Bradford Kinard Smith Kirkland Green Pritchard Pattern and visitor Mrs Frieded Steuer.
