The Rev. Bob Sanders urges timely action as church and community projects advance in Winters. He highlights a housing plan for the elderly and low income, a North Runnels Hospital project, and rural water development, urging sustained enthusiasm to convert momentum into lasting gains.

This week last year records show high temperatures of 78 degrees on January 14 15 and 17 1971 with a low of 26 degrees on January 14 15 1971. Additional readings note highs of 78 and lows of 26 in mid January and mid June 1971.
Surviving members of the 141st Infantry Brigade known as the Last Man's Club held their annual reunion on November 1 at the Crockett Hotel in San Antonio. Ernest Adams, Wayne Hunt, and Oole Hunt attended. others could not reach the event. The gathering featured guest Bill Bertram, a former German artillery crewman, who joined as a guest after being located with help from Harod Say of Stars and Stripes. Bertram recalled serving opposite the 141st U S Infantry during World War I.
The article recalls more than fifty one and two room schools once active across Runnels County. Many faded into fields, yet some served as community centers and polling places. The Runnels County Historical Survey Committee seeks to locate and map all remaining schools, inviting corrections and additions from readers.
Several barber shop quartets from Abilene and San Angelo will gather Monday night January 24 at 7 30 in the Educational Building of St. John's Lutheran Church for a practice and planning meeting. Outstanding quartets from both cities will attend and the public is invited with no admission charge.
Cisco Junior College announced that Winters students Judy Kay Foster and Janet Schwartz made the fall 1971 Dean's List. Fifty-eight students earned this honor out of about 1000 enrolled, with spring headcount expected near that total.
Weather favors farmers with cotton still in fields though high winds hinder stripping. Winters Warehouse reports 635 bales from North Runnels gins since last report, total season 4306 bales. Estimating remaining harvest or completion time remains impossible.
The Winters High School Blizzard Concert Band presents a formal Winter Concert on Saturday January 29 at 730 p m in the high school gym. The event honors former band members and will crown the Band Sweetheart with a UIL Marching Contest film to be shown. Kirke McKenzie directs.
The Runnels Area Boll Weevil Program will hold a meeting at Wilmeth Tuesday January 25 at 7 30 p m Warren Mitchell assistant County Agent says the event will cover boll weevil control methods An entomologist will discuss control and aid area eradication efforts Community representatives will attend and all farmers are urged to come.
The Mid-Winter Conference of Lions International District 2A-1 was held Saturday January 15 in Colorado City. District Governor Homer J. Hodge of Winters presided as about 200 Lions attended.
A twenty three voice choir from Abilene State School will present a concert Sunday evening January 23 at the First United Methodist Church. Service begins at 6 p m. The choir directed by Mrs Iola Harris includes youths aged 14 to 17. Hobson Collins will speak and show slides about school work. Public invited.
Winters Volunteer Fire Department re elected Marvin Bedford as Fire Chief for another year. Bedford, in the role about ten years, has served as a volunteer firefighter for over 32 years. New officers include M G Perry president. Billy Joe Emmett vice president. J C Hodnett secretary treasurer. Wesley Vogler recording secretary. James E Spill first assistant chief. Neal Chambliss second assistant chief. Robert Carey captain of Company 1. Glenn Hoppe assistant captain. Charles Dry captain of Company 2. Carson Easterly assistant captain. Senior Sponsor Mrs C C Easterly Junior Sponsor Sherry Easterly. Mascots Chris Gehrels Mike Riddle. Sweetheart Cheryl Whitlow. James Gehrels chaplain. Pension Board members named are James Spill Tommy Chambliss and L E Bowden.
The third cabinet meeting of the year took place in Colorado City with District Governor Homer J. Hodge presiding. Attended by 46 cabinet members and guests, the gathering announced B. C. Domingues as district membership chairman to serve the late E. B. Keng’s unexpired term, following a reception and dinner for 78 Lions and spouses at the Villa Inn.
Total cash contributions and pledges to the North Runnels Hospital Equipment Fund reach 62310.00 with 1665.00 received recently. Funds include 1500.00 from West Texas Utilities Company and 1500.00 from General Telephone Company of the Southwest. February labeled Memorial Month for memorial gifts. pledges continue.
The Winters Lions Club chili supper set for January 21 is postponed due to flu and virus infections in the area. President Gene Wheat said a new date will be announced after coordinating with the school. previously sold tickets will be honored at the rescheduled event.
Donna Benson and James Vaughan of Winters are named among 1200 scholars for the 1971 72 year at Abilene Christian College. Benson, daughter of John E Benson, is a senior education major and dean's list student. Vaughan, son of E E Vaughan, is a senior Bible major in the ACC Big Purple band and orchestra, also on the dean's honor roll. Scholarships reward academics ability character and need.
Navy Airman Apprentice William E. Coleman son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Harris of Winters has completed the Aviation Structural Mechanic School at Kemphis. Structural mechanics maintain hydraulic systems fuselages and wings aboard naval aircraft.
The Shep Gospel Singing will be held Saturday January 22 at 7 p m at the Shep Community Center. The public is invited.
The Chamber of Commerce steered committee met to form a non profit corporation to develop rental housing in Winters. Nelan Bahlman chairs with Hal Dry and Woodrow Watts as officers. Emma Marks is secretary. A fall housing need survey showed many local workers would relocate if housing existed. A new survey is underway to assess feasibility before applying for a long term low interest loan from a federal agency.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner John C. White outlines revised driver qualification exemptions effective January 1. Beekeepers, beamed farm workers, and farmers within 150 miles may avoid tests and exams. younger drivers may qualify with limits.
Winters city council approved a bid to lease the sewer farm for grazing. Carl Turk submitted the accepted bid of 900 dollars per year for five years, succeeding Bud Busher who held the lease for the prior five years.
