Babson predicts 1959 will be a year of modest gains with no dramatic shifts. He outlines inflation pressures, continued unemployment challenges, currency and bond markets, and a shift toward shorter term investments while stressing diversified portfolios.
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Shuffield spent the weekend in Goldthwaite visiting Mrs. J. Spinks and Mr. and Mrs. Grov Dalton.

Kenneth R. Wilson, son of Mr and Mrs L F Wilson, promoted to chief radioman in the United States Navy on November 21. He received a letter of appreciation from Rear Admiral Nation for his work in the Communications center at Atsugi Japan Naval Air Station. He has served there two years, arrived back in the U S December 19 and left Winters December 31 for a thirty day leave with parents before transfer to Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. He prior to joining the Navy in June 1848 graduated from school.
William Mills, 27, formerly of the San Angelo police, is appointed city night watchman for Winters, to start January 1. He replaces Herman Baker Sr. and will work under Winters police chief L. F. Henni. Mills has eight years in San Angelo and is moving with his wife to Winters.
The Winters City Council ordered an election April 7 to choose a mayor and two city councilmen. Terms expire for Mayor George Poe and Councilmen O. B. Raper and Bob Loyd. Other councilmen are A. B. Spill, Elzie Cox and Lee Harrison. Both the mayor and councilmen serve two year terms with staggered terms for the councilmen.
Mr and Mrs J T Randolph and Collier attended the Texas Christian University Air Force football game on January 1 in the Cotton Bowl Dallas noting their presence at the event.
The Winters Chamber of Commerce board met in special session Tuesday afternoon to canvass ballots. New directors elected are M. D. Johnston, Gus Voss, T. L. Hatler, Al Libbe, and Dr. John E. Griffin.
Jeannine Poe daughter of Mr and Mrs George Poe has accepted a civil service position as recreation leader at Fort Polk Louisiana and will begin duties January 5 She will receive her Master’s Degree from Baylor University in January after a summer study in Paris she has held multiple posts in California Texas Mississippi and Arizona and taught in several schools
A review of Winters in 1958 notes strong construction including new church sanctuary hospital addition and band hall, plus two cotton warehouses and a factory. Farms yielded large grain and cotton crops while streets were paved and downtown alleys surfaced. The last baby of 1958 at Winters Municipal Hospital is a girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Emilio Cantu of Bronte. She weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and arrived at 5 30 p.m. Wednesday December 31.
Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Garrett and family joined Mr. and Mrs. George Lee Garrett and Neal in Fort Worth and Abi lene for Christmas dinner at Mrs. Fred Tinkle home. The Garrets stayed for the Tinkle Wise wedding planned for December 27 at St. Paul Methodist Church Abilene.
Ronnie McNeill of Robstown spent Tuesday calling on Mr and Mrs Sam Cooke at their Robstown residence.

Cecil Drake urges strip cropping to curb wind erosion with crops such as sorghum and blue grass. strip widths depend on soil and equipment.
