Beaumont representative Will Smith introduces a constitutional amendment to make the House Speaker an elective office. Proponents argue it would cut bickering and speed work, saving taxpayer money, by letting voters decide the speaker rather than internal House jockeying and delays.
A large witness turnout from Nueces Willacy and Cameron counties backs Sen Bruce Reagan's Padre Island proposal while Land Commissioner Jerry Sadler flips to support a federal seashore project. House and Senate State Affairs committees hear testimony with 27 supporters and no opponents. The reversal weakens anti Padre efforts led by Rep Rayford Price.
