Funeral services for W. I. Lamar, 79, were held at Busby Chapel in Mineral Wells on Saturday December 2 at 4 00 p.m. A second service followed Sunday in Winters Spill Agraaeh Home Chapel at 3 00 p.m. Rev E L Craig of Lubbock and Rev Ray assisted. Lamar a former Abilenian and Winters official died December in a Mineral Wells nursing home after several months illness. He was born January 10 1882 in Santo and worked for Crouch and Nowlan Construction at Strawn before running a grocery business in Abilene. He later moved to Winters thirty years ago, opened a grocery, farmed north of town, and served as a longtime local figure.
Ruth Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church met Thursday night in the Fellowship Hall for a Christmas dinner. Mrs. Calvin Holloway presided and introduced Mrs. E. E. Dodson who spoke on Christmas In Our Hearts. Gifts were exchanged by a dozen members and guests.
Matthews operated the Triple J Grocery in Santo for 53 years before retirement. He married Nell Bradford 53 years ago. Surviving are his wife in a Mineral Wells nursing home, daughter Buck Matthews of Winters, sister L. E. Shaw of Strawn, and three grandchildren. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery with Spill Funeral Home in charge. pallbearers included John Norman Jim C. Smith J. D. Vinson Ken Vinson Walter Kruse and V. Cooper.
