Pond Design Guidelines for Erosion Prevention and Water Supply

The guidance emphasizes a small surface area relative to depth with at least 25 percent of water at 10 feet depth, a drainage area large enough for adequate runoff, and a properly designed spillway on erosion resistant material. Slopes should be grassed to prevent erosion, and where possible both spillway and pond should be fenced with water piped to a trough to curb overuse and protect the area.

Try A Live Tree This Christmas

Forester Bill Smith of the Texas A and M Agricultural Extension Service urges choosing live Texas friendly trees with root soil so they can be planted after Christmas. Suitable species include arborvitae Arizona cypress eastern redcedar and shortleaf pine though Douglas fir and Scotch pine may not survive in Texas. Ensure roots do not dry, water leaders daily, and plant in a hole larger than the root ball as soon as possible after Christmas. Contact local county agents for species guidance.
