Winters Fire Volunteers Earn Community Thanks For Bravery
In North Runnels and South Taylor Counties grass and brush fires have stretched the Winters Volunteer Fire Department thin. The department battled hundreds of acres of desolation north and west of Winters while many men missed the annual Fireman’s Barbecue. Oil field service firms aided with water hauling as crews fought through rough terrain, risking personal loss for the community’s safety. A landowner praised the volunteers, noting they deserve repayment in thanks, not pay. The writer extols the department’s spirit and urges continued support, then hints at state tax disputes in a sidebar.
