The Babson survey signals August estimates of a 26 percent rise in feed grain output. Corn blight, frost risk, and late growing period uncertainty could keep total production below forecast. Corn and soybean yields may still reach or exceed prior highs with strong demand for oilseed meal.
The 1971 U S wheat outturn around 1.6 billion bushels is seen as bearish while winter wheat may lag, with July 1 stocks up and exports likely to lag prior year. Wheat prices could trail last season while cattle and hog markets face sustained pressure though cattle may hold above last year. hogs and eggs face weakness with potential price volatility into early 1972.

Ralph Novak surveys a crowded field of potential contenders for 1972 including Mills McCloskey Nader Stokes Humphrey Reagan Lindsay Abzug and Nixon. He notes incumbents often win re elections and that the odds favor Nixon as the likely candidate while warning against premature campaign funding.
Dr. John E. Hutchison of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service says past five years saw cotton sales exceed production, shrinking carryover stocks of fine quality. A new education program Better Cotton Yields for Profits and Markets was launched, with July meetings in Lubbock Dallas Waco and Harlingen drawing about 375 industry leaders.
The fourteen state cotton belt reports average field losses of 11 percent with Texas at nine percent. With near ideal conditions and proper machines, losses could drop to four and two percent in spindle picking and mechanical stripping, though weather and other factors make this unlikely. A two percent efficiency goal could raise value by about eight million dollars on last year’s crop. The extension service promotes improved yields through coordinated industry effort and outreach.
