Port Aransas Man Lands Record Spinner Shark

A Port Aransas man, Michael Gatewood, scored a record spinner shark on a party boat trip. He landed a 133-pound, seven-foot, 414-inch shark after a six minute tussle using a 130-pound line with half a bonita as bait. The spinner shark is also known as the large black tipped.

King's Messenger Sunday School Class Social

The King's Messenger Sunday School Class of Drasco Baptist Church held a social at Mrs. Mabel Williams home. Miss Carrie Lee gave the devotional and Mrs. Williams led prayer. President Annie D. West presided as a nominating committee reported officers for next year. Six members and one visitor attended, and refreshments were served.

Funeral Tuesday In Spill Chapel For John Stehle

John Stehle 84 retired farmer died at Merrill Nursing Home after a long illness. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Spill Memorial Chapel with Rev. Chester Wilkerson officiating. Burial in Northview Cemetery. He was born in Hungary August 11 1888 and moved to the United States as a child. Survivors include wife Flora, three sons, three daughters, a stepson and four stepdaughters, plus numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Conditions Favor Turkey and Quail in Edwards Plateau

In the Edwards Plateau, Turkey and quail are bouncing back as range conditions improve. Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists note upland game birds are making up for losses from last year’s drought with early nesting through early summer and many young birds observed across the 16 million acre regulatory area. If rains persist, hunters may be optimistic for next season’s populations.

White-Winged Dove Refuge Changes

The South Texas whitewing season runs Sept 2 to 4 with hunting from noon to sunset. Daily bag limit 10, possession limit 20. A new off limits area south of a line along US 281 between Hidalgo and Brownsville is closed during the whitewing and mourning dove season. Hunters must keep fully feathered wings on dressed doves in relevant counties and when importing doves from Mexico or elsewhere.
