Welfare Reform Committee Proposes Overhaul in Texas
Senate Welfare Reform Committee backs sweeping changes to the Public Welfare Department including gubernatorial control, a renamed Department of Human Resources, and private contract for upgraded electronic data processing to save jobs and money. It calls for abolishing the State Board of Public Welfare and creates an advisory panel, with 2,600 fewer positions projected at 8.5 million dollars yearly. Medicaid costs cited at 11.6 million over under three years, and a new executive with insurance background would coordinate Medicaid efforts now scattered across Welfare agencies.
