The editorial questions who bears the cost of the commercial club Fourth of July events fairs poultry shows taxes schools and highways in Winters Country. It argues residents should unite to withhold purchases from outsiders to support local merchants who aid the town.
The First Christian Church of Winters announces a revival starting August 19 in the Alexander building near the depot. H. M. Gilmore of Fort Worth leads, with his daughter Myrtle Gilmore assisting in song and outreach. The effort aims to form a permanent congregation as membership has grown from ten to nearly thirty.
J E Farrow of Groesbeck arrives to assume duties as secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce. He previously served three years as Groesbeck secretary and helped push development projects including a $750000 courthouse and a $40000 city park. The Groesbeck park housed the waterworks and swimming pool. A $41000 city hall bond was approved and the final paving of the last ten blocks of the business district nears completion.
J. Frank Paxton and his family were seen touring Abilene yesterday, visiting local sights and meeting residents during their brief stay in the city.
The revival at the First Christian Church will be conducted by a visiting evangelist beginning Wednesday night, August 19. Music, prayer, and preaching are planned for each evening through the week.
Mr and Mrs J M Skaggs leave Winters for St Louis and Chicago wholesale centers to select a full line of dry goods millinery ladies wear and men s clothing for Skaggs Dry Goods Co They expect to be away two weeks or more and will study new apparel trends Mr Skaggs optimistic on cotton and feed prospects predicting a bumper harvest for farmers and a prosperous season for merchants.
Bishop H M Du Bose led the dedication of the Methodist church in Bradshaw Texas last Sunday night with Rev W H Lyon and Rev Raymond Van Zandt in attendance. Five babies were baptized the families named include Green Abbott Jones and Hoke with the church packed beyond capacity. Beans and crop notes from local visitors also appear: a mesquite twig with forty one beans and prosperous outlook for fall. Bert E Low and family visited Abilene.
Hatchel in Runnels County thrives with a growing mercantile business led by A. D. Palmer who expanded Hatchel Mercantile and plans a tourist camp. A Warren singing school closes with a concert, J. P. Wessel reports maize fields at two tons per acre, and a Baptist tent revival begins with Rev. Jester and Rev. Quindlen. Also notes about Mrs. Jack Walker's appendicitis surgery and David Holiday's Dallas hospital stay.
The Winters Hatchery under Leslie Alexander reports a strong first hatch with about 70 percent success from randomly gathered eggs. The chicks are thriving and fatalities are very low.
J W Tanner of J W Tanner Dry Goods Company will depart Sunday for the St Louis markets to purchase fall and winter merchandise. He expects a prosperous season and will be accompanied by Mrs Tanner and Mrs R L Labenske who will assist in buying women's apparel. They plan to be away about two weeks.
Jim Smith and his family travel to Belton for a reunion with 150 relatives expected. Grandmother Smith is noted to have 89 grandchildren all planning to attend. additional relatives from near Winters join the trip.
Superintendent Smith confirms the coming school term begins Monday September 7. D S Mitchell of Greenville has accepted the position as head of the commercial department, bringing strong recommendations as an instructor and gentleman.
A rain in Winters county, conservatively estimated at one million dollars, began last Thursday night and covered the area. ground soaked quickly, boosting forage and feed supplies. Young maize rails toward strong growth. cotton, both old and new, expected to yield well, with forecasts of a record cotton crop. Optimism grows as predictions set higher, with runnels county cotton yield projected to 60,000 bales from 40,000. Government reports place last year’s Runnels at 63,260 and Winters at 25,000 bales.
Miss Gilmore will head singing and conduct evangelistic efforts at the First Christian Church revival, leading worship and outreach activities during the event.
Harold Norman of Killeen with Will Sutton arranged to open a dry goods store in Winters in the former G. A. Ludwig building on Dale Street. A buyer was sent to New York to stock the shop, focusing on ladies ready to wear and millinery. The store aims for a first class operation and will open September 1.
Prof Chas Ross Smith athletic director announces he is attending the Rockne school for coaches in Austin Texas. He plans to lead the training camp for the Winters championship football team on the 15th or 16th of the month. He expects to gain knowledge and new plays to benefit the team and its players.
Mr. W. F. Mason has torn down the old gin at Wilmeth and is erecting a modern facility. The new cotton gin will have five stands and top cleaning and hull extracting machines. The Wilmeth community is proud of the upgrade and anticipates better crop handling in Mason's territory.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carmical of Leonard Texas stayed in town early this week visiting their boyhood friend Buford G Owens and were guests in the Owens home during the stay.
The Winters Methodist Church dedicates a new edifice costing over 40000 dollars, cleared of debt within a year of construction. Bishop Du Bose delivers the dedication sermon praising the growth since 1890, with thanks to Rev. Speer and fellow members for building a modern, substantial church that serves as a community landmark. Cornerstone laid June 29, 1924, with Dr. A D Porter presiding.
W. E. Hickman and Mrs. Hickman left for St. Louis markets to buy fall and winter merchandise. He plans to purchase a large quantity as he expects an extra busy season in Winters this year.
Mrs F J Brophy came home in the latter part of the past week after a two week visit with relatives in Cleburne Texas.
