Babson argues unemployment stems from four causes including pricing power, taxes, cheap foreign imports, and automation. He proposes four remedies: secret ballot strike votes, curb monopolies, encourage early Social Security retirement, and legally shorten the work week to 35 hours.
Winters Primary Grades presents its spring program Friday April 24 at 7 30 p m in the High School Auditorium entitled Americas Story in Song directed by Mrs Dorothy Akins It traces colonization from Columbus to modern times with about 130 children in period costumes Paula Poe as Miss Liberty and Jimmy Nevins as Uncle Sam speak for the program Carla Sue Davis plays Columbus and a large cast portrays Spaniards Indians Pilgrims and early settlers with named students in roles and chorus segments
The brothers and sisters of R. C. Slug Mayo express gratitude for neighbors friends and comforting sympathy. They thank those who cared for him at night sent flowers food cards and made visits which meant much to him.
The speaker argues for more college education for youth to curb unemployment, warns against importing foreign goods, and calls for all groups including employers and workers to practice the Golden Rule. He says economic wars will end through give and take, with strikes as legalized warfare, and urges fighting the liquor evil as a cause of unemployment.
A community program features groups of children from east and south areas performing songs representing their communities with western cowboys and cowgirls, railroad workers, and farmers taking leading roles. The program ends with songs Our County America the Beautiful Our Flag and The Star Spangled Banner inviting the public to attend.
Funeral rites for R C Mayo 52 were held Saturday afternoon at 3 in Spill Memorial Chapel with J B Tidmore and Jim Wilburn officiating. Mayo died Friday at his sister’s home after six months of ill health and two months at home. He served in World War II with the 90th Division and was a member of Abilene Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Survivors include four sisters and five brothers.
Mrs. Gene Virden hosted a surprise birthday dinner at the Hardy home honoring John Hardy on his seventy second birthday. Potted chrysanthemums brightened the room as family and friends gathered. Out-of-town guests included Ed and Sandra Edwards and sons Bill and Steve of Stanton, Joe Sherrard and daughter Malcom Hardy of Abilene, John Lytle of Weatherford, W. E. Hudson, Gene Virden, Marie and Betty, and Mrs. S. S. Hardy, the honoree’s 98-year-old mother.
Brownie Troop 1 members and Girl Scouts from Winters prepare for a May 2 display at the Scout Hut from 2 to 5 PM. The public is invited to view the year’s work. The April 17 meeting included a trip to Crews and a hike at Faubion farm with leaders Mrs. Walker Tatum and Mrs. R. G. Cooper.
