Comptroller Bob Calvert tally shows 2,355,159 Texans qualified to vote, up 300,000 from 1958 but nearly equal to 1952 figures. The gain stems from poll taxes and exemptions reported by counties.

Texas to borrow 15 million for water districts and projects

The state will borrow another 15 million on April 19 to assist local water districts river authorities and cities. The Texas Water Development Board may borrow up to 100 million for this purpose. Its first 10 million bond issue is nearly exhausted after four loans. The Toledo Bend reservoir on the Sabine River near Newton is a major beneficiary, slated for a 15 million loan over four years.

Padre Island recreation area study panel to meet in April

Herb Perry, chairman of a special committee, said the panel will meet in April to decide recommendations on Padre Island. Gov. Daniel appointed the committee after disputes over whether the island should be a recreation area under federal or state control. A congressional bill would authorize federal purchase for a national seashore, but House opposition from South Texas congressmen favors a smaller area or none at all.
