Washington June 25 AP The House Republican leadership backed President Hoover in the fight over the World War veterans compensation bill. They plan to enact a compromise measure to suit the president veto upholding the Johnson bill. Senate administration leaders doubt veto survival.
Jenny Duran and Manuel Rodriguez were fined 25 dollars each in Police Magistrate Dunklin's court for selling home brew to Indians. Maxamino Nevera was discharged after U S Commissioner Clark found insufficient evidence for a jury conviction. Ross Rubi pleaded guilty to selling liquor to an Indian and remains jailed awaiting a federal grand jury bond setting.
A Rengo News Agency dispatch from Tsinanfu, capital of Shantung, reports no Shansi troops entered the city this afternoon. Northern occupation was orderly after Nationalist forces evacuated in the morning. Harn Fu-Shu, Nationalist commander, left Tsinanfu on a 3 a.m. special train as evacuation completed later.
Two earthquakes were recorded in the Washington area by the Georgetown University Seismological Observatory. The first event began at 5:27 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and the second, which overlapped, began at 7:06 a.m. local time.
Wreckage of Maurice Graham’s plane was found eight miles south of Cedar City Utah in the Wasatch mountains. Western Air Express officials press for a search while officials guard the wreck site. Jimmy Carson identified the jacket boots and parachute as Graham’s. The crash is believed to involve exposure or disorientation rather than a forced landing.
Arizona highway commission built a home made magnet to scrape state roads. In two years it has gathered 150000 pounds of iron nails screws and wire along with 75 tons of junk including tacks springs knives forks and bolts. The device has covered nearly all state maintained highways and was manufactured in the highway department shops in Phoenix.

VATICAN CITY June 25 AP illness of Pope Prus XI who has sat on the throne of St Peter since 1922 casts a pall over the Vatican City. Official circles show a tendency to discount seriousness of the Pontiff's malady but there is general recognition that in his age 73 subjected to strain of a sedentary and mentally active life might prove dangerous as described.
Reports from Indian despatches show a violently hostile reception to the Simon Commission recommendations. Native circles remain agitated, particularly in Bombay and Calcutta, though many parts of the country have not yet reported.
Two Stanford University students attempted a cross-country flight when their plane ran low on fuel and made a forced landing near Wichita Kansas. Pilot Leopold C. Schumacher of Palo Alto California died. passenger W E Edwardson of Brooklyn New York was seriously injured.

Prescott Arizona June 25 Lou Fisher and C L Houck Winslow residents were injured when their car struck concrete on the Helps Canyon bridge. They were cut by flying glass but neither was seriously hurt and emergency treatment was given locally.
Phoenix residents vote on a proposal to issue 43,422,000 in bonds to upgrade the municipal water and sewer system. Officials expect a light turnout.
Raymond J. Knoeppel from New York City and Almon E. Roth of Palo Alto Cal were nominated for the Rotary International presidency. Nominations for ten directors in the United States were also made with elections to follow. Sir Henry Worth Thornton chairman of Canadian National Railways called modern industry a menace to world peace in a Rotary convention address marking the silver anniversary.
London June 25 AP The first lord of the admiralty told the House of Commons that supplementary estimates for 1930 naval construction would cover three 6 inch gun cruisers nine destroyers three submarines four sloops and one net layer and target towing vessel. Orders for laying down these ships would be placed in the last quarter of the financial year and only a small sum would be required for the vessels named.
Federal raids on the Central Park casino and the Ritz Carlton Roof led to bail set from 500 to 1000 dollars for guests officials and waiters. Guests faced liquor possession charges while Ritz Carlton officials were charged with maintaining a nuisance and waiters with sale and possession.
Two hangars and 27 airplanes including 12 tri motor planes were destroyed by fire at a municipal airport. Loss estimated over two million dollars. Explosion in Universal hangar followed by flames as ground crew saved five planes. Southern Cross lands at Harbor Grace Newfoundland after crossing the Atlantic en route to New York.
An international fete honoring Father Kino Captain Anza and Coronado will mark the American Legion state convention in Nogales on August 24 25 and 26. A three sided monument to the explorers will be unveiled with participation by residents of Nogales Arizona and Nogales Sonora. The Ridge Igo post of Nogales Voiture of the Forty and Hight sponsors the event.
Toyoku Kaneko, acting consul general of Japan, announced a 15 million dollar Japanese company plans a 68 hour San Francisco to Tokyo dirigible run before next fall. The firm aims to buy three zeppelins at 1.5 million each and acquire Tokyo land with a San Francisco terminus near the business district. Each flight would carry mail, 40 passengers, baggage, and crew with an initial one way fare of 900 dollars and sailings every five days.
In Mexico City on June 25 a daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Thomas Arnold Robinson. Mrs Robinson is the daughter of Plutarco Elias Calles former president of Mexico.
The State Department weighs a potential U S claim to part of Antarctica once flown over by Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd. The area, about 150000 square miles, overlaps British holdings near the Ross Dependency with Byrd Land to the east. A decision is not expected soon.
Park H. Pollard of Cavendish a cousin of Calvin Coolidge was nominated at the Vermont Democratic caucus in Burlington for governor. Pollard declared his absolute opposition to the eighteenth amendment and the Volstead act and his support for their repeal.
Perez R. Babcock of Santa Barbara California married Loren C. Barton an artist from Oxford Massachusetts yesterday in Rome at the city hall. The couple wed in the capital's civic building in Rome.
