Inside Power Companies Propaganda in Public Education
St. Louis and Nashville publicity agents testified on a federal trade commission utilities inquiry that four volumes of stenographic transcripts reveal efforts by the power industry to sway public opinion through the press and schools. About 4600 letters were entered as evidence as hearings resumed, with Missouri and Tennessee cited for extensive propaganda in schools and 8 000 to 30 000 pamphlets distributed. A 1922 Missouri circulation plan approved by Governor Sam Baker is noted, and Sheridan’s files contain letters calling private ownership a mortal enemy of the human race.
