Schmeling Wins World Heavyweight Title On A Foul

Max Schmeling won the world heavyweight title at Yankee Stadium after referee Jimmy Crowley ruled a foul by Jack Sharkey in the closing seconds of the fourth round. Sharkey, who had led much of the bout, delivered a low punch that knocked Schmeling to the canvas. Harold Barnes, one judge, supported Crowley’s call, declaring Schmeling the victor. The crowd of about 70,000 watched a chaotic finish as controversy erupted over the decision and the fight’s outcome.
