A flood event on Main Street leaves two people dead and several buildings unroofed as three feet of water sweeps through the area. The incident prompted emergency response and ongoing investigations into the storm damage.
United Press Transcontinental wires report Herbert Hoover received a hero’s welcome in San Francisco with a police band, mayor James Rolph Jr., and crowds showering paper as he toured streets and the city hall. He spoke briefly about an era of trade growth and recalled his early job search in the city.
King George approved Cosmos Lang of York to succeed Randall Davidson as Archbishop of Canterbury. Lang, born 1864, became youngest English archbishop at 47 and formerly Bishop of Stepney and York, noted for reform campaigns and writings. Guy Warman tipped for York.
Formal murder charges were filed against five men named Domenick De Soto, Rocco Gravino, Mike Pulillo, Vito Ardito, and Leonardo Gelano, alleged ring members in the Palombo case. John Tastini was freed on murder but jailed for vagrancy. Augie Palombo, a Los Angeles racketeer, was killed in a bootleg gang war.
Fifteen detectives guarded Wanamaker officials as they recovered the so called mystery jewels valued at nearly half a million dollars believed to have been illegally sold by a former servant in Baltimore. The gems were recovered on a writ of seizure after Mrs. Maria Leslie bought them on the credit of Mrs. Emerson. Police said Leslie is mentally unsound with a London criminal record and daughter of the late Edward P. Eastwick of Philadelphia. She is in a Connecticut sanitarium.
In Albuquerque on July 27 a woman, Mrs. Ramona Solis, died after clothes caught fire during cooking and she perished. Her husband was near death after a later explosion when a gasoline can was tested after a dispute with a neighbor, Juan Torres, whose wife helped extinguish flames.
Grace A. Fendler aged 80 won 781 891 in a plagiarism suit against Richard Walton Tully and Oliver Morosco over The Bird of Paradise. She began the case in 1912 claiming her Hawaii novel inspired the production, which toured widely with top actors. The Referee ordered the award after a prolonged 16 year fight.
On July 27 in Chicago the witness Frank Meccia testified that former congressman Charles S. Wharton received a $4000 cut from a $123000 Evergreen Park mail robbery loot. Meccia, a confessed gang member, testified Wharton faces complicity charges.
France announces sixteen nations will witness the signing ceremony of Secretary Kellogg's antiwar pact at the Quai dOrsay on August 27. United States Ambassador Herrick and Foreign Minister Briand invite Spain, while Berlin signals Stresemann may attend. Mussolini's Rome may send a representative.
Dr. Harry P. Hoffman signed a confession admitting he killed his wife with a hammer. The confession was revealed at a hearing after Hoffman had initially claimed a stranger perpetrated the crime. A hammer used in the beating was recovered and retained by officials.
In Belgrade on July 27 M. Koroshetz formed a cabinet appointing himself premier and interior minister. M. Marinkovich remains foreign minister.
A major oil fire on the Buffalo river destroyed the barge John F Cahill and fireboat Gratten, with 5200 barrels ignited. One man died, another missing, and eight firefighters seriously burned as crews from thirty stations fought the blaze amid explosions and rising water danger.
Norma Burnham a nine year old girl escaped a kidnap attempt in Los Angeles when she refused a ride and ran, pursued by a stranger who fled to his car. Police stations were alerted with a description as alarmed bystanders aided.
A July cyclone struck Miami Arizona causing extreme flooding, two believed dead and over 200000 dollars in damage. Main street waters three feet deep swept through, power lost, roofs torn, two houses demolished by lightning, and a baby rescued after drifting in Davis Canyon.
Buck Lowery reports the new steel bridge over the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry is delayed by a broken three foot elevation tension screw. An attempted substitution with a jack may not work, risking a two to three week layoff and missing the October 15 dedication. Lowery also notes deer hunting party plans and ferrying logistics at Kaibab.
Phoenix bank clearings for the week ending July 25 rose by 3 066 312 from the prior year according to E F Barrows of the Phoenix Clearing House Association.
The United States and the nationalist Chinese government signed a treaty granting China control over its tariff schedules for US concerns. The pact, signed in Peking by American envoy MacMurray and T. V. Soong, follows secret negotiations since March and aims to foster goodwill toward the United States while allowing China to set duties on American goods without bias against other nations.
General George Roskruge, 84, longtime Arizona pioneer and Mason, died after a long illness in Tucson. He arrived in Arizona in 1872 and served as a U.S. surveyor from 1876 to 1907, later guiding state school work and national rifle affairs. Masonic grand lodge officials plan to attend his funeral Monday afternoon.
