Wellington reports that more than 180 people died in the Ba and Singatoka districts of Fiji as a hurricane and floods struck recently. A government ship crew said the storm wrecked a Lautoka train and blew away the Nadi lighthouse, with devastation confined to a narrow coastal strip.
Senator C C Crenshaw three man highway commission bill, a compromise measure to abolish the present commission, was tabled in the Arizona House by a 40 to 23 vote. The bill had passed the Senate last week, minutes after introduction. Some members changed votes to keep option for reconsideration.
Florence Arizona February 26 AP guards stopped an attempted wholesale escape at the state penitentiary when Earl Nelson Jerome bank robber and Charles Barnes Maricopa highway holdup man were found concealed in the cannery after sawing from their cells overnight. Nelson and Barnes led last year s cash for freedom escape that freed ten men four of whom have since been recaptured. Prison officials said the cannery concealment was timed as searches for 12 inmates at large continued in surrounding desert areas.
Federal investigators probe what is described as the largest flavor prescription syndicate. About 1,000 physicians and 400 druggists are under review after 14 raids at 12 drug stores an office building and two hotels. More than 30 men arrested. 1432 signed prescriptions seized from Nathan Bernstein's apartment. Forty seven physicians named as conspirators with more names pending grand jury action.
William Bruein a 21 year old bootlegger known to police was shot to death after the automobile he drove was forced against a telephone pole at Brooklyn Avenue and Cherry Street in Detroit early today.
Havana awaits the Los Angeles dirigible tomorrow as United States Ambassador Guggenheim secures Cuban state department permission for the ship to fly over Havana. Dispatches say it will reach between 7 and 8 am after participating in naval maneuvers off Panama and mooring at Guantanamo. It will then proceed to Jupiter Florida and Lakehurst New Jersey.
The three American Woolen Company mills in Lawrence Massachusetts employing about 10,000 workers will close indefinitely. Moses Pendleton vice president said operations will not resume until strikers accept last Monday’s terms.

Chicago February 26 opponents of Big Bill Thompson for mayor urged a united front against his bid. They opposed Coroner Herman Bundesen's Independent run placed by the Peoples' Non-Partisan ticket, while Democrat Anton J. Cermak led the Cook County Board ticket after Thompson’s Republican primary victory. Col. Robert Isham Randolph of the Association of Commerce criticized Bundesen’s entry.
The bar silver price in New York closed at 267 and 8. The report notes firm trading in precious metals with limited activity and no major shifts in value observed.

Mrs. Will Ashby, 50, wife of a Dripping Springs miner, was found in good condition at 4 am after an all night search in the Pinal mountains. She had wandered seeking shelter in oak thickets after leaving her cabin to visit the mine yesterday afternoon.
Edna May Cooper 26, world endurance refueling flight record holder for women and film actress, is missing in Hollywood. Police sought today after her mother Mrs. Mary Cooper reported she left their Hollywood home Tuesday at 9 30 a m and has not been heard from since. A diamond ring and diamond studded wrist watch valued at 4500 were noted by Mrs. Cooper as reasons for concern.
Four bandits robbed the Security State Bank of eleven thousand dollars in Kansas City on February 26 and fled in a car taken from a woman in front of the bank.
In Vina del Mar the Prince of Wales played baccarat at a new casino. He started with about 10,000 pesos and netted 420 pesos by dawn, then later reportedly won 272,000 pesos on Wednesday in daybreak play, before resuming after journalists expected retirement at the presidential palace.
Eugene Meyer was confirmed by the Senate as Governor of the Federal Reserve Board by a large vote. Only eleven opposed, with 72 senators supporting his recess appointment. Meyer previously served on the War Industries Board War Finance Corporation and the Federal Farm Loan Board.
Hastings Nebraska February 26 two policemen were kidnapped by four bank robbers after a gunfight in which two people were wounded. Patrolman William Woode was tied to a fence post near Grafton and released several hours later. Police Captain Frank Wettman was released eight miles from Sylvan Grove about 32 miles away.

In Phoenix on February 26 a House memorial seeks to set aside about 44 000 acres in Coconino County Arizona from the public domain as a range for a state owned buffalo herd The plan calls for fencing water development and expanding the herd from 397 to 250 plus maintaining 25 antelope on the range The measure was introduced by the House Committee on Fish and Game.
In Detroit on February 25 the National Education Association department of superintendence adopted resolutions upholding the eighteenth amendment with only one dissent. Dr. Daniel S. Kealey of Hoboken, New Jersey, was the lone opponent, offering a repeal resolution.
