Tokyo reports the Japanese government plans to increase its Shanghai army from about 25 000 to 50 000 men after cabinet discussions led by War Minister General Sadao Araki. Chinese defenders halted a three day Japanese assault, influencing the decision.
Ninety pupils from the Leupp abandon site travel by two buses to Ft Wingate New Mexico and trains. Upper grade students depart for Albuquerque and Phoenix. Additional groups head to Gallup Tohatchi Roosevelt Ft Apache and Keams Canyon as distributions proceed.

Berlin February 23 Madame Johanna Gadski 59 noted opera singer died today after injuries from an automobile crash yesterday. The car was driven by Mrs Geraldine Bangs of New York and passengers included her husband Captain Hans Tauscher and daughter Mrs Caroline Busch who were injured. Gadski was to lead a German opera tour of the United States next fall and was known for Wagenerian operas.
The LaGuardia resolution urging California Governor Rolph to pardon Thomas Mooney was rejected today by the House judiciary committee in Washington.

The Senate Naval Committee approved the Hale bill to authorize building the navy to the London treaty limits. It was approved unanimously and carries no appropriations. Hale estimated a ten year completion would cost about 980 million dollars depending on funding spread.
