A special naval court of inquiry finds joint responsibility for the collision between the S-4 submarine and Coast Guard destroyer Paulding off Princeton Mass last December. It also faults Rear Admiral Brumby for insufficient leadership and recommends action. Secretary Wilbur orders reconvening to review findings.
Mrs. Katherine McMillan testified as a defense witness for Dr. Charles McMillan in the murder case of Chicago widow Amelia Appleby. She said the physician visited her at a hotel on the day Appleby was killed and that he showed no signs of violent conduct. The defense plans for McMillan to take the stand when court resumes.
Harry Story aged 25 of Venice was buried by a cave-in while working in a ditch today and smothered to death. Fellow workers escaped unharmed as the slides occurred.
Manila P I Feb 22 direct commercial radio service between America and Shanghai announced by C H Nance eastern representative of RCA. Entry marks first step breaking monopolistic contracts between Chinese government and British Danish telegraph firms signed in 1884 and renewed to 1931. RCA argues radio transmission not covered by old contracts providing American firms cheaper message transmission for commercial interests.
Albert Dewey Gaines held in contempt of court for refusing to testify at Rev. Philip Goodwin’s murder trial. Gaines, imprisoned at Folsom for Patterson death, fears bodily harm from fellow inmates if he testifies. Adjourment granted to regroup witnesses as Ruth Walser identified Patterson’s letters and clothes.
The house and senate will hear Washington's farewell address read tomorrow and adjourn in tribute to the nation’s first president. President Coolidge will attend the memorial service in Alexandria Virginia where Washington worshipped and belonged to the Masonic lodge. Mrs Coolidge is confined by a cold and cannot accompany him. She was able to sit up today but remains weak.
Port au Prince Haiti February 21 two men died when a marine plane crashed at Port De Paix Lieut John T Harris US Marine Corps and Homer Howell representative of United Fruit Co were aboard the craft at the time of the disaster.
Ruth Toms identified William Hickman as the man who shot Ivy Toms during the 1926 holdup at a Los Angeles drugstore. She spoke in a sobbing voice of the robbery and exchange of shots, while Welby Hunt sat nearby reacting to the testimony. The defense opposed moving the trial to inspect the store, citing potential mob danger.
Four men were arrested in Los Angeles on charges of outraging public morals for selling pictures of Marion Parker's mutilated body. Bail set at 1000 dollars each. Arrestees include Hugo Hallman of Angelus Photo Service, Jack Kursa, Dick Sparks, and George Smith. Hallman accused of reproducing the images for others to sell at 50 cents each. Officials question how Hallman obtained the official negative.
Oslo reports ten persons die when the steamer Norge grounds and sinks five minutes after leaving Haugesund. Among the victims are three passengers and the captain who stayed on the bridge. The ship was not listed by Lloyds. the Norge was a 1389 ton steel crew steamer built in 1903.
Mexico City February 21 Three priests arrested in Chihuahua for opposing religious laws were deported to the United States. Bishop Armora of Tamaulipas remains detained on similar charges. Inspector General Roberto Cruz case awaits action. Government may buy 12 new planes to fight rebels in Michoacan Colima and Jalisco.

He lauds American mining engineers for shorter hours higher wages and living standards and stresses global responsibility to apply science and support university education and ethical professional standards.
London Feb 21 George Washington’s lineage is traced to 12th century England by genealogist John Graham under Harvard’s Dr Albert Bushnell Hart. The Washington line may stem from William De Hertburn of Washington village Durham 1180 with descent to 1300. Graham seeks relics and notes ties to London and Aldersgate church memorials for Elizabeth Washington and Lord Burlington as the 1932 two hundredth birth anniversary nears.
