A crowded Peralta ferry boat in San Francisco Bay caused passengers to fall into the water after an accident. Rescue efforts and searches continued through the night as authorities detoured ferries and policed the bay for possible bodies with many passengers unaccounted.
Deputy state bank examiner S Smith testified before Judge Phelps in Flagstaff about claims in the J R Hullett trustee case and files of the Navajo County Live Stock Loan Co. The Merchan ts and Stock Growers Bank of Holbrook note of 274 192 69 was guaranteed by Holbrook directors and the original value dated 1924 was about 90 000.
In Agua Nicaragua on February 17 Sandino’s forces raided Trinidad evading American marines. They killed the mayor telegraph operator and several conservatives and burned stores and ranches. The sacked merchant establishment owned by German Vice Consul Hooper at Matagalpa area is noted as well.

Police chase ends with the gunfight after two bandits rob the Penell State Bank of 3000 dollars. One bandit is killed, the other wounded and identified only as Stevens. The robber alarm wires misfired, drawing D. M. Grass and E. Lee Dunlap into the pursuit. Grass killed the unidentified robber and Dunlap forced Stevens to surrender. All stolen money recovered.
Public outrage over the Marion Parker murder continues as the Hickman and Hunt trial for Ivy Tom’s slaying stalls. No jury session is planned until Tuesday as judges and lawyers review amended California statutes and prepare trial transcripts.
The Federal Trade Commission announced it would immediately investigate public utility corporations under the Walsh resolution. The independent senate group, defeated in pushing a special committee, met to draft a resolution to probe the plant lobby and influence on the Walsh measure. Senators backed FTC action by a 46 to 31 vote, with utility representatives signaling approval.
Henry Froelich a Hawaii native died of apoplexy aboard the S. S. Finland while traveling from Cuba to Oahu last spring. He was buried at sea but the coffin surfaced twice and his body was recovered on a beach between Ventura and Hueneme before final instruction from relatives.
Justice Siddons dismissed contempt of court charges against Charles L. Weitsch Baltimore Burns detective agency manager in the Sinclair Burns jury shadowing case. The ruling found no evidence beyond reasonable doubt that Weitsch was part of the juror shadowing scheme. Government contends Weitsch was involved up to his neck.
Calcutta February 17 Many American travelers aboard the liner Resolute are to witness the Hindu conversion of Miss Nancy Ann Miller of Seattle before her marriage to the former Maharaja of Indore. Javalkar, Martha Mission secretary, says American interest could spur Hinduism in the United States and notes plans to establish headquarters in New York or Chicago.
Fifteen crew members died when the S S Chucky sank after a large explosion off the coast of Japan. Twenty one crewmen were rescued by Japanese fishing vessels and taken to Hachiroshima Island. Named deceased include Capt. Hernes and Mate Kellogg among others from San Pedro and Los Angeles. the ship had home port in San Pedro and had sailed from there January 9 for Yokohama.
Au Yin Hong a Chinese motion picture actress known as the Oriental Billie Burke received deportation orders in Honolulu T H She had been detained for weeks awaiting medical examination to determine TB status and future action by immigration authorities.
Cassie Turn, 25, near Alturas California, allegedly killed Robert Declute after he asked her to marry him and she refused. Deputies report she complied with his request to take his rifle and shoot him through the heart as he stood in his shack. She was jailed on an open charge.
Senator Wheeler of Montana, who led the department investigation that spurred Attorney General Daugherty’s resignation, is expected to join the coal strike investigating committee. Senator Couzens of Michigan is slated to be named chairman of the subcommittee.
