Guns roared again at Shanghai as diplomats dined with Nelson T. Johnson mediating peace efforts. From the Hotel Cathay windows war flashes lit the river fronts at Chapei and Woosung while Japanese planes bombed Woosung and observers noted heavy losses.
In St Johns on February 12 Premier Sir Richard Anderson Squires and officials were beaten by a delegation of unemployed who protested delays in dole hearings. Squires was struck on the jaw and knocked to the floor in the council chambers during the clash.
The British East Lancashire regiment, slated for Khartoum in March, has been redirected to Shanghai. The unit will sail from Poona about February 23.
In Centro California on February 12 voters in the Imperial Valley irrigation district approved the 35.5 million all American canal contract with the Federal government by about five to one. The project taps the Colorado river for irrigation and power with a 40 year interest free repayment. Construction cost estimated at about 33.5 million under current conditions. Authorized by the Swing Johnson bill passed in December 1929.

Paris, Feb. 12 The American dollar fell on the Paris exchange from 25.40 francs to 25.85 as bankers reported. The bourse opened strong amid Wall Street gains and the credit extension plan. French experts say the plan hinges on American confidence and ending hoarding to be beneficial.
