Mayor urges a thorough public look at needs and a pamphlet outlining advantages and disadvantages of financing flood control and other improvements in the city with a sales tax. The call came after H R McHood pressed for audience questions at the city council meeting.
Fred Basgal a senior at Winslow High School won a speech contest held at the school sponsored by the American Legion. Entries discussed aspects of the U S Constitution. Basgal advances to a Snowflake district contest March 1. Marcie Gonzales and Katherine Joe placed second and third.
Civil Air Patrol planes hunted today for James G. Cox 41 and son Tim 18 missing since leaving Holbrook for Deer Valley Airport northwest of Phoenix. The pair were not heard from after late Tuesday morning departure as winds and storms sweep the area.
Mostly cloudy with scattered snow flurries today and continuing cold. High near 30, low around 15 tonight. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph. Tomorrow's high again near 30. Yesterday reached 45 with a 23 low. Precipitation 0.03 inches as snow.
Initial reports indicated seven Americans wounded as a building housing about 40 U S enlisted men collapsed into rubble. Two Viet Cong attackers were killed, their bodies found with explosives still on them.
Officials relayed to Washington an estimate of 20 to 30 American deaths, described as without confirmation. The figure remained unofficial pending verification by authorities.
The Associated Press reports more than four inches of snow fell in Tucson early today, ranking as the third heaviest desert snow. Palm and orange trees broke under the weight while the temperature dipped to 24 degrees. Nearby areas saw higher totals, with 4.1 inches officially recorded and a foot of snow at the Grand Canyon region.
Winslow council approved transfers of two liquor licenses and the relocation of a Snowflake Tavern license to the West Ways Motel site in the 600 block east Second. Final control rests with the state liquor office. city council must advertise and recommend. The mayor opposed the Snowflake transfer. no protests were filed. Further liquor matters will be addressed at the next council meeting.
Postmaster General John A. Gronouski stated he would ask Congress to end the air mail category, arguing there is no longer a reason for it. The move targets simplifying postage and aviation service distinctions.
Cape Kennedy Florida AP reports a Titan 3A booster is set for Thursday to attempt three engine relights in space. The mission includes four orbital maneuvers and the release of three satellites including an experimental communications payload.
Volunteers for the Heart Fund drive in Winslow met at the C. L. Cesar home for a captains coffee to prepare for Heart Sunday activities on Feb. 21. Present were Heart drive chairman James I. Chavez and vice chairman Cody Eden.
Mrs. Merle Farmer a Democratic party worker and former Winslow assistant city clerk was appointed superintendent of the Pioneers Home at Prescott succeeding Mrs Caroline Kinney.
