The Winslow Daily Mail campaign ends the first voting period at midnight on Saturday February 12 as candidates rush to secure subscriptions for a Buick sedan prize worth $1495. A second period follows with reduced voting power, and a final round halves votes again.
Senator Winsors Yuma measures sail through the Arizona Senate with near unanimity. One bill would disqualify about 14 000 voters. others regulate party employee spending and canvass publication. A $25 000 emergency appropriation would fund a six member legislative code revision commission.

The report from Vigo cites 200 killed in Oporto fighting as a Daily Mail dispatch notes a bomb hit the Grand Hotel room once occupied by the American consul. The Portuguese embassy says Oporto revolt was crushed and Lisbon unrest limited to a few sailors and guards. Madrid reports no clear news. Spain sends troops and naval craft to Portuguese waters.
Six convicts sentenced to hang for the Stateville deputy warden killing won a stay until March 4 to allow an appeal to the state supreme court. Circuit Judge Arthur DeSelm noted funds for the appeal and set two weeks for filing a bill of exceptions. Governor Small and the pardons board had refused to intervene.

Miami county officers raided the Silver Slipper and Hardie's casino on the Southern Riviera as part of a crackdown on gambling. Six arrests were made and devices seized including a roulette outfit and blackjack kit. A third venue Evelyn Nesbit Supper Club was found dark as deputies arrived. prior raid on Miami Beach clubs yielded Joe Ryan in custody with two roulette wheels seized.
Government calls Arthur Brent, longtime butler to three presidents, to describe life in the eight room suite at the Wardman Park hotel. Brent testifies about visits by Harding and other figures, detailing meetings tied to the alleged assets return involving Richard Merton and the American Metal Company. The trial resumes as Brent, Miller, and other Witnesses offer testimonies in this complex corruption case.
John Colter Sullivan, a member of the bandit trio captured January 27 after Sheriff Andrew Maxwell of Apache County was shot, pled guilty to assault with intent to murder and grand larceny. He received 12 to 15 years for the former and 3 to 5 years, to run 10 years consecutively, for the latter. Sullivan will be sent to Florence prison.
A major blaze at the Brooklyn Navy Yard caused an estimated loss of 1.0 to 1.5 million dollars. Three warehouses housing vegetables sheet metal and five antiaircraft guns were destroyed in New York.
President Coolidge sent condolences to the widow upon the death of Dr. Charles D. Walcott secretary of the Smithsonian Institute. He described Walcott as an eminent scientist whose work in geology and paleontology had been valuable and influential to the scientific world.

Dr Nicholas Murrey Butler president of Columbia university calls for the Republican party to officially declare for repeal of the eighteenth amendment and the Volstead act He accepts Senator Borahs challenge to bring the prohibition issue before voters ahead of the 1928 election He says he favors repeal explicitly and would be glad to see his party take that stance
