Estell Woods II, ten, shot and killed his father Estell Woods I in Phoenix. The elder, 35, died from a throat wound. The boy said he acted after his father beat his mother. Woods Sr. was a Kentucky minister and noted big game hunter who lived in Arizona for health reasons.
Sheriff J M Hyndman said extortionists demanded 50000 threatening family harm toward E Haldeman-Julius. Two traps failed last night near a schoolhouse. A mysterious phone call advised placing money in an old mill. a dummy package and second trap also failed.
Beacons New York Dec 4 Three men armed with guns invaded Mattewan state hospital for the criminal insane early today overpowered four employees and liberated six inmates. The gang’s leader was identified as former inmate William Nelson of New York and hospital officials said his knowledge of hospital routine enabled the escape. The superintendent noted the escapees were not known as dangerous but were mentally ill and highly cunning.
On the way home to Cairo the couple Marshall Field and his wife left Dec 4 by steamer for America after a hunting trip and honey moon in western Africa. They flew from Nairobi to Cairo.

Tucson Arizona December 4 CAP A IK Lundy director of the magnetic Observatory at the University of Arizona said a tremor 6500 miles away from Tucson was recorded while the Albuquerque quake at 2 36 p m was not. Seismograph readings showed no indication of the Albuquerque quake. The other quake began at 12 16 p m and lasted three hours.
A valley rancher was swindled out of 2200 dollars by a group of gypsies during a fortune telling session. Sheriff Charles Wright of Maricopa County leads a two day hunt for the culprits, led by a woman with gold front teeth, as the rancher reported losing his life savings after being hypnotized and urged to produce cash.
The British cruiser Suffolk rescued the crew of the German motorship Hedwig after it ran aground on Pratas reef between Hongkong and the Philippines. A fierce battle with waves and wind preceded the rescue as the Suffolk approached the reef today.

President Hoover nominated George Charles Butte of Austin Texas as vice governor of the Philippine Islands. Butte, a former attorney general of Porto Rico and acting governor there, had served as special assistant to the U S attorney general since 1928 and taught law at the University of Texas from 1914 to 1924.
The Interstate Commerce Commission rejected proposed increased freight rates between Pacific coast and Florida peninsular points. The action blocks railroad plans as discriminatory to Florida origins and ends the third rate attempt since 1928.
A Montville, New Jersey blaze killed Mrs Canda Garden 27 and her three children Madeline 3:3 Frederick Jr 2 and Jean 1 as their home burned to the ground. Fire officials reported the fatal flames late today with quick, deadly spread leaving no survivors.
Flames from the Pratt works of Standard Oil lit the Brooklyn waterfront early today. The three hour battle by land and water controlled the blaze after it threatened to consume the plant. Mellon predicts a $180,000,000 deficit for the current fiscal year, while the 1930 surplus totals $183,789,215. All surplus funds will retire the public debt which stood at $16,185,308,299. Further legislation is requested based on these calculations.
A British force near Mirikhel in the Northwest Frontier Province fought marauding tribesmen during reconstruction work. Captain H. S. C. Will of the Sikh regiment was killed, and one tribesman was wounded as the force was leaving the Mirikhel camp.

Scott White, incoming secretary of state, qualified for office by taking the oath of office at the Capitol yesterday. He will succeed I. P. Fraizer on January 1.
