Florence Arizona August 4 AP nine inmates escaped from the state prison at 1 15 this morning including five of the southwests most desperate criminals. Ten men were listed absent at first check but one has since returned.
Police say a woman arranged the killing of gang boss Jack Zuta at a lake resort dance hall near Delafield Wisconsin after Zuta talked to authorities about the Lingle murder. Zuta had hidden in Wisconsin and had telephone contacts with Mrs Laura Nelson. Authorities pursue a jail-held trio of women in Milwaukee for questioning.
The worst recorded drought in U S history continued with no end in sight. Across hundreds of communities pastures died as forests yellowed and streams dwindled. Forest fires rose east of the Mississippi and water shortages hit the hills. Churches prayed for rain as crops faced damage in Arkansas Tennessee and Mississippi with new rainfall lows in March through July. Ohio and Kentucky set fresh low totals while Indiana faced severe deficit.
TOPEKA Aug. 4 A Republican gubernatorial primary closed after a liberal clash of personalities as voters prepare to decide tomorrow. Governor Clyde M Reed seeks a second term on his record while Frank Chief Haucke denounces the governor as peculiarly unfit for office. Haucke, ex American Legion leader and legislator, is backed by party leaders including David W Mulvane.
British Columbia forestry officials report after a week of firefighting all fires are controlled. Eighty eight fires remain burning while 167 have been extinguished during the week, according to provincial authorities in Victoria.
In Bucharest on August 4, minister of trade M. Madgearu announced a communique stating the oil industry will curtail production by 150000 carloads per year. Earlier outputs rose from 635 carloads daily in 1924 to 1570 carloads daily currently.
Dr. Augustus O. Thomas, president, said the World Federation of Education Associations will hold its next meeting in Denver from July 27 to August 1, 1931.
Two men died and thirteen people were hurt as a Fort Worth and Denver Railway passenger train derailed at an underpass near Vernon. The wreck left victims in Vernon Wichita Falls Electra and Fort Worth hospitals with varying injuries. Survivors received emergency aid and investigators searched the scene for causes.
A Hankow report says a Japanese gunboat off Changsha was heavily fired on by communist machine gunners. The gunboat returned fire and silenced the attackers. In California, Col. James M. Arrasmith, 74, longtime Indian fighter and U S A hero, died after retirement in San Leandro.
A fishing camp on the Ohio River near Louisville saw a boat with nine children and three adults capsize during a Sunday outing. Five children and the father of one child drowned, with other passengers surviving.
Gallup New Mexico endured a forty five minute cloudburst with a fierce electric storm. Three quarters of the city flooded from mud and water leaving many homeless and damaging basements and goods worth thousands. Volunteers and city workers evacuated residents as a complete block of Coal avenue pavement failed and the Federal Tire building suffered heavy damage.
The United States will withdraw three of its 18 battleships for scrapping this fall. The Wyoming Utah and Florida will end long service before year end saving nearly 4 million dollars. The action follows the London naval treaty ratified earlier, marking a major step in disarmament.
Rain halted work on the damaged fin of the British airship R-100 near Montreal. Crews removed torn fabric and prepared a full patch while weather cleared. If flights resume on schedule, the craft may fly to Ottawa Toronto and Quebec City. the Quebec airport drew a large crowd yesterday.

Detroit August 4 AP Thousands of men return to work at Ford Motor Co Dearborn plant and other Detroit area facilities after coordinated vacations and inventories. Ford says about 100000 workers are back with output set at 1000 units a day on a four day week, with total returning workers estimated between 100000 and 200000.
Iowa joined Minnesota North Dakota Montana and Washington in opposing the proposed merger of the Great Northern Northern Pacific and Burlington railroads. State railroad commissioners notified the Interstate Commerce Commission they demand conditional sanction be denied.
Bar silver priced at 34 1 4 in New York trading, with AMG AP report noting a downward movement in the market.
A searching party is seeking three youths missing since yesterday morning near Santa Rita mountains at Soavita 35 miles from Nogales Ariz. Marion E Hughey of Dallas Texas, David E Conghanour of Nogales and Paul MacGregor of Nogales are missing from the Citizens Military Training Camp.
John Henry Mears aims to reclaim the world circling record after his plane the City of New York wrecked at 2 45 am near Harbor Grace Newfoundland. Co pilot Henry J Brown unharmed. mascot Tailwind TI fled the scene. Mears vows to try again possibly this year or in 1931.
A heavy rain and electrical storm poured over Prescott, Arizona, early today. In the Clifton Duncan district, more than half an inch of rain fell in under an hour with no damage reported.
Elaborate preparations were made at Croydon airport to receive Ramy Johnson, a 25 year old British girl flier who recently flew from England to Australia. Miss Johnson left Vienna at 7 am for London in an India air mail plane.
Ted Lundgren left United airport bound for Kansas City and Roosevelt Field New York in a blue highwing monoplane loaded with 500 gallons of gasoline. Co-pilot W J Seiler and aircraft official W H Emerson accompanied him as officials said the fuel could cover a nonstop run though Lundgren planned a one stop trip with Seiler and Emerson leaving the plane in New York to be joined by an unidentified co pilot and radio operator.
Two fairly violent shocks were recorded today on Fordham University’s seismograph, first at 12:12 AM and a second seven minutes later. Seismographs placed the epicenter about 3000 miles from New York, likely in Central America, with shocks more sharply recorded than recent Italian quakes.
Four people died in south France from lightning as weekend storms swept the region. A bolt struck the Poujol family's home at Aveze in Gard department killing the mother and daughter. Two men perished at Clermont-Ferrand near Lyons.
Eight suspected communists were beheaded in Hankow as military authorities tightened defense against a red uprising. Additional troops patrolled the city and all residents were searched. The French community formed a volunteer defense corps for emergencies.
