The store advertises a strong line of black dress goods from 5¢ to 2.00 per yard and Amisilk jacket linings at 35¢ to 50¢. It mentions 36 inch skirt lining at 10¢, 10,000 yards of cotton and silk lace 1 to 9 inches wide at low prices, plus Winter and Fall waists in Mercerized Silk and Wool. A Persian Shirt Waist at 1.50 completes the value-focused offer.
Sept 10 Gaventon Texas reports a cyclone-devastated Galveston with life losses estimated from six hundred to one thousand. The city is wrecked with the wharf front gone, boats stranded, bridges destroyed, and residents seeking aid as floodwaters inundate the island.
A Houston dispatch reports Galveston severely hit by a cyclone with about 1,509 people drowned and $10,000,000 in property destroyed. All bath houses and Sealy hospital with patients were lost, grain elevators and several schools destroyed, eight steamships wrecked, and bridges swept away. Tremont Avenue stood under eight feet of water as the island submerged.
The Philippine Commission prepares its first public session to discuss allocating one third of a $6,000,000 treasury fund for roads and bridges. Manila revenue under the Spanish system had taxed American civilian salaries $200 per year and up at 5 percent, a levy met with protests.
Passengers aboard the John Erdicott of the Boston and Plymouth line were rescued after it struck a sunken rock near Minot's Light Cohasset. The ship tore a hole in its side and foundered off North Situate, with lifeboats saving all aboard as Cohasset and Bituate lifesaving stations responded.
Last month's freight traffic on Lake Superior reached 3,714,774 tons a drop of about 7 percent from the prior peak due to reduced iron ore and grain business. Through the year more than 16,400,000 tons have moved in and out, exceeding any full navigation season before 1890, with three months remaining.
Detroit September 10. After six days of talks the conference committee of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers and representatives of major iron and steel manufacturers adjourned without adoption of a new scale for bar sill and puddling salaries.
On September 10 the German steamer Deutschland arrived in Cherbourg and Hamburg after passing the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, New York to Cherbourg and Bremen routes. The Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was sighted at daybreak and passed by noon, with Deutschland pulling ahead and out of sight by nightfall.
General Joseph Wheeler aged 64 reaches the U S army retirement age and ceases to be commander of the Lakes department. He retires after sending command to General James H Wade and will return to his Montesano Alabama home. General Otis to assume permanent control later.
The United Mine Workers executive board adjourned sine die without endorsing strike action. President Mitchell says negotiations proceed and a strike will be ordered only if operators fail to meet demands within a set time. Influences aim for a peaceable settlement, with the final decision reserved to Mitchell and Secretary Wilson.
The Tokyo foreign office reports General Yamaguchi says Colonel Shiba escorted Prince Ching back to Peking after ordering by the emperor. The prince’s residence lies in Japanese-occupied district guarded by Japanese troops. the area is quiet and commerce resumes. The Tang Tsun railway southward is operating, but beyond it lines may be closed for now.
The Shanghai correspondent reports Sang Fau, viceroy of Yun Nan and Fwei Qohuan, set out Sept 5 at the head of a large army to rescue the emperor. An imperial decree seeks to clear the empress dowager of blame in attacks on foreigners. Li Hong Chang plans to go north Sept 11 with Chang Wei and Taeng, amid growing Japanese volunteer involvement in Peking defense.
A Washington official states Japan aligns with U S aims on China up to a limit. He warns that any partition of Amoy or Fukien would be viewed as unfriendly and Japan would oppose hostile control of those areas.
President McKinley’s letter accepting the Republican nomination has been released. The document outlines his Philippine stewardship, asserts a withdrawal from the islands was never feasible, and notes the financial debates of the prior four years resurface in the current campaign.
About 8 000 united carpenters quit work in Chicago at noon delaying projects. They demanded the usual Saturday half holiday, a concession contractors would not grant except in summer. Carpenters had returned under union permits before the stoppage.
