London dispatch reports Pretoria confirming Johannesburg has been handed over to British control. End of the day update notes a strategic transfer in the region.
May 41 Pekin reports say Chinese forces have occupied all disturbed localities around Pekin and spared no one. Boxers remain a concern as fighters defended a house in Ching Tien Hei before the house was burned. Foreign guards may be landed if Chinese officials fail to act.
Shanghai reports the Chinese government issued an edict prohibiting the Boxers with death as the penalty. The document, signed by the emperor, is described as equivocal and seen as an excuse rather than condemnation. Officials in Washington link it to foreign legation pressure on Pekin.
Locomotive firemen promoted to engineer must drop membership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen to join the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Some had held both orders, but at the convention session a five vote majority adopted the rule requiring choice between the two.

Dispatch from Lourenco Marques says Commandant Drous surrendered Johannesburg to Lord Roberts. Fugitives claim Pretoria evacuation Tuesday and a shelled train near Elandsfontein Junction. They report Pretoria demoralized with a mad coastward rush and five train loads of fugitives expected tonight.
London Times reports the war nearly finished with the British flag atop Pretoria. Kruger allegedly fled and headed toward Delagoa Bay. Hay, son of Secretary Hay and U S consul at Pretoria, urged a special move to protect many British prisoners.
A May 29 dispatch reports Kruger wavering but seeking guarantee he will not be exiled to St Helena. Boer fighters desert in large numbers as the peace party remains strong and collapse appears near.
The transport Meade with General E. S. Otis aboard arrived from Manila after 25 days. Three smallpox cases aboard include a quartermaster, a stowaway, and a soldier. one death occurred en route. The ship carries 112 deceased soldiers and a passenger list of 49 cabin and 134 steerage. Otis hopes to land for an Eastbound train, health permitting.
On May 31 insurgents rushed San Miguel de Mayno in Bulacan Luzon killing five Americans and wounding seven. Captain Charles D. Roberts and two privates are missing. No Filipino deaths were found. A band escorting troops was attacked near Hang to Silang, with three insurgent casualties. Lieutenant Jens E. Stedje led a scouting party in Albay defeating and capturing enemy troops. The Hancock transport carrying the Philippine Commission arrived in Hong Kong after departing San Francisco.
In the American and National Leagues, multiple day results from Buffalo Chicago Milwaukee New York and Brooklyn report scores with second games noted. A separate item from St Louis states the board of police commissioners ordered sheriff to mobilize a 1000 strong posse to aid the police under a section granting such authority.
