A Cape Town dispatch reports the Mafeking relief force has passed through Vryburg en route to the besieged town. A Pretoria dispatch says a 3000 strong British relief force is marching along the Brehuana railway by forced night and day. It reached Vryburg yesterday.
In Blaisdell paper Io a lead pencil with a rubber eraser was sold for five cents, matching the usual price.
A 3000 strong British column reached Vryburg, 100 miles from Mafeking, Thursday and pushes forward harried by Boers. General Hunter's main force 50 miles south at Taungs moves slowly with 8000 mounted troops. Lord Roberts advances toward Kroonstad while Buller moves from Elandslaagte toward Helpmakaar.
Manila report states Senor Buencamino, once in the Filipino republican cabinet and later freed by General Otis, has reconciled to American sovereignty. He proposes a peace platform to insurgent leaders, urges recognition of U.S. protection and a constitutional framework, and argues Filipinos lack self government and need American control to avert civil strife.
Havana May 12. Postmaster General Emery Smith dispatches the inspection service to conduct a complete investigation into alleged misconduct in the Cuban post office. Havana records reveal an organized ring stealing from postal services. A confessed suspect implicates Charles F. W. Neely and several trusted department employees. Secret service agents recovered stamps valued at 650000, with total shortage now estimated under 100000.
